Hello everyone!
I haven't posted a lot because I am designing and searching for ideas but I am a little stuck. We have the basic layout done for the L-shape but need help on designing an island. This is what we are looking for:
* Enough space for a cooktop (30")
* Seating for 4-6 depending on the design
We are going with Ikea countertops because we can upgrade to granite in the future and I want more of the budget to go to appliance which are harder or most costly to upgrade. We like the Pragel White countertops but they don't offer larger depths in the planner, online, or in the cataloge.
The Kitchen brochures show pictures of countertops that are deeper and one of them is Pragel. Does this mean they can do it or only for the brochure?
How much room do you have? You need a minimum of 36" clearance around the island but more behind seating. Each seat needs a couple of feet. That's a fairly big island. Post your plans and you might get more help...

Doh, I knew I forgot something! The seating can go behind, on the side, anywhere we can fit...
Here is the plan:
Re: Help designing an island please
The family room is right next to the kitchen but my husband doesn't by any cabinets going past the "wall" next to the fridge, if that makes any sense!
How do I upload the actual plan so others can edit it? Thanks!

It might be (2) Pragels back-to-back, with a seam running down the middle or a custom countertop.
That said, there is nothing wrong with having a different countertop for the island. The Pronomen beech in the 39x73 size is one reasonably priced option.
How big is your kitchen anyways? The thing about having a cooktop on an island is that you better have a good amount of buffer space between the cooktop and where people are going to sit. To seat 4 people, you're looking for one at least 8' long and 4' deep overall ... which is quite sizable.

The pictures don't should a seem at all, that is why I am curious. I wonder how bad it would look to have a seem????
My kitchen is about 17' x 9' for just the area itself but then there is about 4' between what we concern the edge of the kitchen (if you draw an imaginary line from the fridge wall to the back wall with the sliding glass door) to the family room that I could work with for the actual seats.
Another point: the seating is just to add seats since we expanding the kitchen into the eat-in area. We have a formal dining room which we actually use when we have family over. There is only two of us and we rarely eat in the kitchen or the dining room as it is.
Hope that makes sense! Thanks for everything so far and can't wait to see any ideas!
Seems workable, then ... so If you can attach the fpf planner file, that would allow us to directly put in our suggestions.

4' deep, 7' wide, and maintaining an aisle of approx. 42". It can be shrunk to 6' if you want to omit the seating by the patio door.
Other changes ...
- 30 + 15 glass wall cabinets over in the corner, making better use than the 9" cubby + wasted space.
- 15" base cabinet instead of 18", allowing enough room at the end for a 30" wide tall cabinet instead of a 24".
- Glass wall cabinets over the dishwasher.
- Deleted a couple cover panels and added filler strips where needed.
Another possibility ... elevate the seating area by using 39" narrow base cabinets, so the island is a 2-tier. This creates a bigger and more distinct buffer between the cooktop and the people.
