I've thought about this off and on for awhile, and wondered what everyone else thought?

For those of you that know someone that decided NOT to go with IKEA because of *X* thing that they couldn’t do with IKEA cabs, what was the missing piece?

If you could talk to IKEA Kitchen Cab designers and ask them to make new/supplemental items to add to the AKURUM/RATIONEL etc. lines, what would you ask for?

Some of the things that Susan and I have batted around:
    1. In between cabinet widths: 3"6"9"
    2. Pullout spice rack (picture a bottom cab height about 3" wide, like a VERY narrow pullout pantry).
    3. Shallower/Deeper depth upper cabs to allow flexibility and use of crown mounding on differing height layouts.
    4. Toe Kick drawers.
    5. Super Susan.
    6. Cab boxes to match the darker door styles ADEL MB, HALLARUM, LILJESTAD etc.
    7. Glass doors where the glass can be removed and replaced with aftermarket glass of choice.
Obviously these are things that we’re never likely to see (some are in Europe, but not in NA), but I’m curious what the most common shortfalls/areas for improvement are?

You never know who might be reading…

James

Tigratrus, you already HAVE a Super Susan!!

A dark wood cabinet box.
Thinner veneer panels that can be applied to other stuff so it matches. And matching patch kits with putty or something to patch holes etc.
A 33" sink base...it seems to be almost a standard in American kitchens.
Cool Euro-style appliances for the American market!
An undercabinet/built in microwave (or at least a trim kit)
21 and 24 inch drawer kits
Pullout pantries wider than 15"

1 - Toekick drawers.

2 - More sizes in the horizontal wall cabinets

3 - Toekick drawers (they deserve a second mention)

Oh, and I'd change the grundtal brackets so that they held the rails differently. That way, you could just cut the rails without rethreading the ends.

Great idea for a topic!
  1. A numerar kitchen sink. I love the sleek profile of the new laundry sink, I'd love to not have to learn to cut my counter to fit around a sink, I love the price, but could we please have a numerar sink w/ a flat bottom?
  2. I second the idea of a 9" wide base cabinet and toe kick drawers
  3. glass doors to match nexus birch
  4. horizontal cabinets that better match the dimensions of the vertical ones
Also, I wouldn't use them myself, but with the amount of DIY-ness I see here, I think adding an unfinished door style would be a no-brainer for ikea.

Things I wanted when laying out our kitchen (mostly already mentioned, but I'm adding my vote):

1. More mix-n-match on the drawer combos (stacks of 3, 4, or 5), and in 3" width increments from 9" to 36"

2. Replaceable glass panels. Or even just a choice: they had the right glass pattern, but not for Adel White. The Adel White glass is just ugly (uhm, I mean, "it's not to my taste.")

3. We could use 42" tall wall cabs in our kitchen - for some unknown reason, our ceiling is 99".

4. I kind of wish that instead of the add-on light rail, they just made the wall cab doors longer to drop below the bottom of the cabinet. It would be more keeping with the general style of frameless cabinets, and I've seen such from other manufacturers.

I understand that the first three are all in opposition to the way they keep costs down. ("If you want custom cabinets, you know where to find them. Don't forget your firstborn!")

Toe kick drawers (I'm now obsessing over them!)

Wall and base cabinets in 3" increments for those odd to fit spots.

Replaceable glass in glass fronted cabinets OR an option to mix and match glass. I'd be willing to pay a few dollars extra to swap out some of the patterned glass with plain.

Glass fronted wall cabinets in a wider variety of sizes: why CAN"T I have one that's 24" wide?

A micro/vent to go over the stove (if they make one, I keep missing it, so correct me please if I am wrong!)

Also, I think it would be interesting if they started to manufacture Susan and James's wrap cabinetAFTER they pay them for the rights to the patent!

Youmay calla pipe dream, butI wish they would redesign the dimensions of the cabinets so that doors could be used more creatively, i.e.: like using a 12" wide cabinet door as the front for a 12" deep, 30" wide deep drawer. Right now vertical doors can only be used horizontally on horizontal wall cabinets, with just two options. And thenthe dimensions of thehorizontal wall cabinets do not align with the other cabinets; give me a break...:X

Speaking of horizontal wall cabinets, I wish that there were at least as many choices in cabinetboxes as there are for the restof thecabinets (2); I particularly dislike the current option of choosing any color as long as it is white.

And finally the drawers: why can't we have both shallow and deep drawers available for all cabinet sizes? And why do we have to buy certain drawer fronts only in sets rather than individually?:?

I haven't got my IKEA kitchen yet, but, I would like to have the option for the following:

1. More traditional looking cabinet doors.

2. Cabinet boxes to match all door styles.

3. Dishwasher cover panels to match door styles.

4. toekick drawers and a toekick "step" stool pullout for us short people.

5. roll-up cabinet in matching cabinet color vs. only aluminum.

6. 9" pullouts.

7. 21" and 24" drawer bases.

8. Option to have different type of glass other than patterned.

9.For those who have higher ceilings, a small 12" x 12" or 15"x 15" wall cabinet with glass inserts to hang above the 30" wall cabinets to show off display items.

10. Cover panels for the end of cabinet runs that would look just like the cabinet doors (for a more finished look).

I know I'm dreaming, but...................you never know.

What I most miss in the IKEA cabinet lineup is stacks of 4 to 5 drawers in wider widths. Specifically I'd planned a 36" 4 drawer stack. I'm still deciding whether or not to use IKEA cabinets, or try for a combination of IKEA and custom.

Toekick drawers would be nice too, as would a better choice of horizontal display cabinets to match up with the regular cabinet styles.
