I live in the
United States
, and bought a house in 2001 with an Ikea kitchen. I believe that the kitchen was installed in the 80's. The kitchen still looks very good, and I am impressed by how well the cabinets have held up. BUT it would look much better if I could replace the cabinet doors.
I called my local store, and was told that I could not because in the 80's stores in the US sold cabinets with European sizing, and that the doors they sell now do not work with the old cabinetry.
Is this true? Is there a way for me to get new doors that would work with my kitchen cabinets?
Thanks for your help!
If I can change out the doors my kitchen will look like new!
I can't speak to how different the door sizes might be, but I'm wondering if something like Scherrs might be a good option for you? Other people here have used them to make doors for Ikea cabinets, so they are used to drilling holes that work with the current set of Ikea hinges, at least. If you gave them a list of doors and maybe even sent one of your doors or drawer fronts to them, I bet that they can make fronts that work with your existing set of hinges and drawer mechanisms.
Just to check - you just want to replace doors and drawer fronts, right? You're not looking to replace the innards as well?
If it's metric, chances are it's a System 210 setup. Still, one way to tell is to measure out a few cabinets, outside-to-outside.
System 210 should be mostly on 10cm intervals (30cm, 40cm, 50cm, etc.), whereas
Akurum
would be on 3" intervals (12",15",18", etc.).
Akurum definition
Akurum is the North American equivalent of FAKTUM; that is the fitted, frameless, component kitchen cabinet line, which when paired with door and drawer fronts as well as interior accessories makes up the full kitchen cabinet system.

The cabinets are the least expensive part of the whole thing...it's the door and drawer fronts that can get pricey. Check out the IKEA cabinet line and you might be convinced to go new for everything...it won't be a significantly higher amount of money and the time spent trying to retrofit can be put into renovating instead!

60cm wide, then, meaning it's the discontinued System 210.
Alas, the current doors in North
America
would not work. I don't know whether the
Faktum
doors used in all other markets would work either; shipping them in could be an issue (and/or very costly).
Still nice to know they've held up for the past 2 decades!
If it's in the budget, perhaps relagate these cabinets to the garage and get a whole new kitchen instead?
