Soffit Has Ductwork!!!! - Major Problem

Ok so I had a reliable family member come in and tell me that a soffit in my kitchen does not have ductwork or anything in it... I took his word and also checked out the closet in my kitchen which the soffit runs into, and no ductwork continued into the closet so I thought I was ok.

Turns out that was absolutely incorrect! I have a soffit with ductwork and I am screwed, my new 42" cabinets will not work now!

What can I do? Is it possible to do something with the ductwork or should I just stop thinking crazy thoughts???

Please help!!!!

Re: Soffit Has Ductwork!!!! - Major Problem

Oh and the ductwork seems to be servicing the 2nd floor of my house... it runs out from the main trunk in the house and does an L around the kitchen and then goes up somewhere... not directly to any vents! I am not exactly sure where it goes!

If you can at least minimize the soffit, then that would yield you some more room. Otherwise, taller wall cabinets may indeed be out of the question.

I've been blogged!
Re: Soffit Has Ductwork!!!! - Major Problem

Ouch, I feel your pain, having run into a few ducts and pipes in my time. I can tell you that there are options, but you'd need an HVAC (heating/ventilation/air conditioning) contractor to make a determination of what they are. You should also be prepared for some sticker shock.

From the other side of the Delaware, I'd say that where the ducting runs parallel to your joists, you can probably tuck the duct work up inside the ceiling, but where it runs across the joists, you might have a problem. Maybe an HVAC person knows of some way to reroute the ducting so it's out of the way of your cabinets. Another option might be to reduce the size of the ducting without losing its efficiency - in that case, you might be able to build a small soffit to hide it, or cut the cabinets in a way to accommodate the duct work.

Don't despair just yet - the worst that happens is you return your 39" cabinets for some 30"-ers. It might not be what you wanted, but it may be the only option.

Good luck.
