Hi- I am new to the ikeafans message boards and hope someone will be able to help answer a question-

We are just starting the process of planning our kitchen design and we would like to "stagger" our kitchen cabinet heights.

I know that the kitchen cabinets are installed on a "rail or track" system. Does anyone know if on the back of the cabinet box there are different hole locations to mount different heights of cabinets using a single rail? Or do different height rails need to be installed?

I would really appreciate any response! Thanks a bunch! Michelle

There are no predrilled alternative holes. Interesting question whether it would make a structural difference to make some of your own....

I don't see why you couldn't mount the brackets that go inside the cabinets at different levels to achieve your stagggered effect. The brackets just mount in the predrilled shelve pin locations which run from top to bottom.

You would just have to drill a hole through the back panel at the correct location to access the mounting hardware on the rail. The only problem would be that the two original holes in the panel would show.

As long as the brackets don't get below the middle of the cabinet, I don't think you would have stability problems.
