One more question today:
We are going to install the large (36x24x24) over-the-fridge cabinet and I am wondering if we need some sort of extra support for this beast. It seems too large to be supported by just the rail (and it doesn't touch the fridge). My husband wants to attach "legs" so that it can sit on top of the fridge and then attach a plinth between the bottom of the cabinet and the fridge, though I am worried that this will look bad. Has anyone else hung this type of cabinet? If so, did you use extra support?
the recommended install of this cabinet is to have coverpanel support on either side.
Though i have only done that in cases of no walls or cabinets near it. I have been known to secure a support between the wall and cabinet (at stud) when there is filler.
you could also mount a cleat below the bottom in the back. it would not be visible unless you were really trying to see it.
You don't need legs necessarily...you could just add a block that sits under the middle of the cabinet to relieve a bit of the stress on the back rail. It would be far enough back (and you could paint it black, even) that it wouldn't even be seen unless you were right up there on a stepstool or something.
My 30x24x24 is attached on three sides: the rail in the back, the tall pantry on the right and a cover panel/corner wall on the left. I think that is the recommendation in the instructions. Those cabinets are really huge (and it's hard to find ways to use them efficiently), but I needed the depth for the semi-built-in look.
