Hi all -

I'm having a terrible time finding modern-looking ceiling fans that are made for fluorescent lights. I'm okay with no dimming ability and all that. If they took incandescent bulbs I'd feel confident switching them out with the correct compact fluorescents.

However, most of the lamps that I'm attracted to are made for use with halogen bulbs. I've NEVER owned anything that has a halogen bulb in it. I don't even know if they are screw-in or have the little prongs or what (both? either?). I know that people like the light they produce (good) but that they make a lot of heat (bad) and are big energy hogs (badder).

I'm restricting myself to lights that either require or that can easily be switched to fluorescents. Could anyone with experience with halogens share info about how I'd go about determining whether a particular light fixture could accept C.F.?

This guy uses a circular fluorescent, so he's the winner so far. Not as pretty or low-profiles as the Minka aire from above, though.

sorry to disappoint you ... but every halogen I've ever seen or owned has light bulbs with the prong thingies and they do not screw in. I've never seen any halogen fixtures that would be capable of using fluorescent bulbs.

It seems like ceiling fans that you've shown photos of should have an option for fluorescent ... I'd keep searching - I'm sure you'll find something you like that can use fluorescent bulbs.

Oh, I'm not disappointed, I'm just very happy to hear that my gut feeling on this was correct. This way I won't get tempted into anything that would end up making me REALLY disappointed once I got my first electric bill!

After searching far too long on the internet today, I've found some other contenders that use fluorescents or compact fluorescent bulbs.

No idea about halogen sockets for ceiling fans, but there are definitely halogen bulbs that screw into the standard incandescent base. I replaced our recessed lighting with daylight-style compact fluorescents, and while they don't fit aesthetically as well as the halogens did, it beats the heat they give off in the summertime and they're almost as bright.

And they are very bright! I have only one exterior fixture for out front to light the driveway/entry and it does a great job. It is outside so the heat output is not an issue. I also haven't seen many fans with fluorescent lighting. Not sure why this isn't more popular.

hello all,
I think as long as you are replacing them, be sure to get the daylight----full spectrum bulbs to put in. They are much better for your moods, do not cause headaches, and they last a very long time. They may be more costly at the start, but the time they last will more than pay for them in spades!

Some of these modern fans
(like the cloud and nimbus)
will accept fluorescents.
