Re: Recycling cardboard boxes
I still don't know about the Emeryville ikea (though they do recycle batteries and light bulbs), but as a resource to anyone in the Berkeley/Albany/El Cerrito area here in SF Bay:
the El Cerrito Recycling Center allows you to just drive up and put your separated recyclables into dumpsters. They also have oil/paint/etc dumping points. The big bonus is that they don't charge and you don't have to prove residence, a rarity in this area.

Re: Recycling cardboard boxes
Tigger's mention of kindling is a great reuse. Another great idea: lay the cardboard out on sections of your lawn where you plan to garden, and start a lasagna bed! It's also called sheet composting, and cardboard as a base is a very effective weedblock. You can then layer grass clippings, shredded leaves, veggis scraps, manure, soil, and anything else that would go into compost, and let it sit. You can even plant directly into it: I have done thins in my vegetable garden with great results.
