I could be wrong about this. And unlike some on this board, I am not a fan of Ikea (not that I don't like them, I am considering an Ikea kitchen, after all - just not the type for fandom). I am also not always a fan of good data only (everyone likes a good story). But if I understand the fact sheet at the beginning of this thread correctly, then the American standards are actually stricter (.13ppm vs 8mg/100 gram, which translates to 80 ppm, if I did my math right) and since that is what Ikea is adhering to, it just means that the German and Finnish standards were, at one point, more stringent than anyone else's but now the NA standards are more so. Am I misunderstanding? Please let me know.
FWIW
, I was overexposed to formaldehyde on the job years ago and have a lasting severe sensitivity to it. I have multiple items of Ikea particleboard in my home, and even when brand new out of the box have had no reactions, so I would say that
Akurum
and Malm at least are safe - extremely low or no formaldehyde.
My allergies are a testimony to Ikea's low chemical content in the store, too: the only places in the store that cause me to sneeze are fabrics/rugs and baskets/floral, which are both to be expected due to the natural materials there.
Keter I'm very sorry to hear that happened to you! But I'm thrilled to hear that you can fill your home with things that don't make you sick(er) and don't have a gigantic price to tag to go along with it.
As of 1/1/2010, the California laws on formaldehyde levels are the strictest in the world. Ikea phased down it's levels to match starting in mid-2009. To make life easier on the company, they just apply the strictest world standard to ALL their merchandise. That way they don't have to worry about a product for country A getting sent to country C by mistake. (don't laugh, it happens!)
It's just like the independant lab lead testing the US started requiring after all the lead found in kids toys last year. Didn't affect Ikea a bit: they've been doing that since the kids department came around. Or BPA. It's not in Ikea stuff. But the culture of Ikea means they won't come right out and say, "look what we don't do." Kinda silly here in the US, but apparently it makes sense in Sweden!
I'm chemically sensitive (as in I can't use commercial soaps or even drink soda because of the chemicals in the colorings), but I spend upwards of 8 hours a day, four days a week in Ikea and live in a house full of Ikea. In my (Ikea) kitchen remodel, the only thing that set me off? The drywall...even the good-made-in-
USA
type!
