Clean peanut oil... Can it be composted?

Rather than throwing the peanut oil away, I'm thinking of pouring it on the compost heap. I think Susan used it to fry something, but probably just veggie based?

I'd think that peanut oil would be fine... Anyone know otherwise?

I've been blogged!
Re: Clean peanut oil... Can it be composted?

I am not an expert. At all. But GOOGLE tells me that it's okay if you mix it with Browns and it has not had any contact with meat, cheese etc. Small amounts only- some people were trying to compost 5 gallons from turkey frying and it attracted friends...that tend to overstay their welcome.

The problem with oils is the fats can go rancid, which in turn can attract bugs, flies and other larger creatures. Plus, it could stink. Too much oil could prevent aerobic bacteria from doing their job, and anaerobic bacteria generally stink (literally!) But, if you mixed it in with brown dried grass and/or leaves in small amounts, I would think it would be fine. Keep it away from green grass.

Re: Clean peanut oil... Can it be composted?

Gotcha... The green grass would have too much nitrogen?

Brown grass and leaves etc would be fine though I take it?

Just trying to get a feel for it, I'm only talking about a cup or so, just hate to throw away what's essentially pure plant material .

Oh btw , I had a VERY graphic demonstration of your point about too much green grass just today. Had a wheelbarrow that had some grass clippings in it that didn't get back to the compost heap in a timely manner... The it rained and it sat for a few days till I got a chance to get back outside today.

Yikes... What a stench!
