I purchased a PAX wardrobe, and in Step 3 I'm instructed to hammer 2 star-shaped screws into a board. Am I to hammer the screws all the way in until they're flat against the board? I've been hammering and hammering but the prongs barely make a dent into the wood.
They don't have to be all the way in, those pieces are there just to hold the front legs so that they can be adjusted through the holes on the bottom of the cabinet. The weight of the cabinet will make sure that they stay in place. But you can always get a bigger hammer...
Be careful here!!! It sounds like you are hammering on the star nuts with the unit already built, and that could be a no-no - the danger is that you will hit the bottom shelf hard enough to split out the dowel and cam screws.
The best way to do this is to lay the bottom shelf flat on a hard surface (like your non-carpeted floor), face down, and then hammer the nuts into place. Be firm, but not over exuberant. I use a 20 ounce hammer for this, but a 12 or 16 ounce should work, if you hit hard enough.
And welcome to IKEAFANS!
And WD's right - the nuts have to be in just enough to hold the legs, though not so loose that they fall out when the unit is stood up or you turn the legs for adjustment.
Thanks for the replies - I was trying to hammer them into the bottom board before assembling the whole wardrobe, I just wasn't sure how far they had to go. In the end, it turned out that by the time I had the wardrobe upright, the little feet had fallen out anyway.
