I'd be VERY wary of anything like an IKEA coupon or a 'free IKEA gift card' anywhere but directly from the IKEA site and/or catalog, or a mailing directly from the store. There are any number of scams out there. See here for more info: IKEA Gift Card Scam ... Again » IKEA FANS | THE IKEA Fan Community
There are two kinds of coupons at IKEA I'm aware of that are legitimate - one is given away in some markets to college students just prior to the beginning of the school year. The others are sent out in certain markets in 'new homeowner' packets from the Post Office that you get when you do a change of address.
Yeah, unless it's a mover's guide coupon, there aren't any nationwide coupons out there. There MAY be store specific ones, but I'd check with the store about validity before going for it.
I asked the auction seller to guarantee I would be able to use it, so she did, and I was able to use it. It worked fine in the store. It was some type of promotional $25 off $250 that Ikea uses for marketing purposes.
I got one of these coupons when I filed a change of address with the post office. I just bought another one from a seller on Ebay (seller has 99% positive feedback). The coupon is good nationwide. They usually sell for $5, so you pay $5 and get $25 off. The coupon is usually only valid for a couple of months....be sure to check the expiration
I bought an Ikea coupon off of ebay. It was $25 off of a purchase of $250 or more, which was exactly what I needed for my $319 Klippan loveseat. I bought it off of ebay for $4.
When I went to the store to use it, the cashier asked me if this coupon had been emailed to me. I told the truth: that, yes, this coupon had been emailed to me after I had purchased it off of ebay. She said she couldn't use it because it wasn't mine. It was part of a promotion that Ikea sent coupons to home buyers, and since I wasn't that home buyer, that she couldn't give me the discount. I told her that I wanted to change my previous answer from the truth about ebay to a lie that involved me purchasing a house and getting the coupon that way. There was no barcode or serial number on the coupon, so there was no way to authenticate my new story. The cashier knew better than to argue with me, so she radioed a manager to help sort everything out.
Once the manager arrived, she and the cashier whispered to each other for a few moments, and then the manager addressed me and told me simply, "You've been scammed." I informed the manager that, no, I hadn't been scammed, but I had a feeling that I was ABOUT TO BE scammed. It's not my fault that Ikea distributes coupons that aren't trackable through their marketing systems. The manager stated that the store had seen so many of this type of coupon with that SAME email address that they had learned to recognize it. She said they would allow me to use this coupon today, but if I had anymore at home, then don't bring them back. This was the last straw for Ikea!
So, yes, it works.
But no, I don't recommend trying to use them at the store unless you're feeling feisty and disagreeable.
Well, full marks to IKEA for accepting the voucher.
From what you say you presented a copied/faked/duplicated voucher, you told them that you had not acquired it legitimately, then tried to lie to them to make them accept it and, despite all of this, they still allowed you to use it.
I imagine this could easily have gone the other way with IKEA calling the police so I think it speaks volumes for their customer service.
I think you were very fortunate but, hopefully, this will serve as a lesson to others not to try and use dodgy vouchers in IKEA!
This is where you can get the voucher yourself and not pay a seller on Ebay.... IKEA New Movers
It's designed for people who are moving soon or have already moved. So if that describes you, just go to the above link at the Ikea web site and they will e-mail the coupon directly to you.
