ARKUM base cabinet cut to height?

Hi all,

I don't know how I stumbled on this site but I dig the ideas. I was looking into using the AKURUM kitchen cabinets as a vanity unit (and through the searches, I know this has been done as I also like the taller vanity as well). I have a narrow bathroom where the existing vanity is 18" deep and I know I can rip the depth of the carcass to match. Though, I wonder if I can rip the height to my desire (another unit to adjoin to the new vanity). I'm looking for a staggered setup so I can retain the towel bar there without interference and have extra storage. So, can this be done?

To help visualize, the vanity would be the standard 30" AKURUM 30" to 18 inches in depth, still at 30-3/8" height untouched (plus the 4" CAPITA legs). And to the right of that would be a standard 24" AKURUM ripped to 16 inches in depth but cut to 18-19inches in height (so I can still use 12x18 drawer fronts), also on CAPITA legs. Above the 24" unit would be the towel bar.

First post here, be gentle. Much thanks in advance.

Re: ARKUM base cabinet cut to height?

You want 24 wide but 18" tall? There is already a cab like that--it's a "fan" cab. It uses a single door. You could cut it to make it shallower but I'm afraid I don't understand why you'd want it to be shallower than the neighboring cab. The doors will have a hard time opening.

So it can be done?

Shallower because opposite that wall is where one would exit the tub/shower so the dimensions are right where I'm looking at. Beyond that would be the toilet and then the wall. Currently, I have a table there of that size and would like a cabinet there instead. One big door I'd rather not do. Double doors (two 12x18), one swingout with one shelf for towels and the other would be draw out using RATIONELL fully extending drawer hardware for toilet paper, soap bars, etc.

Re: ARKUM base cabinet cut to height?

Yes, it can be done. There aren't really any rules here
In my opinion, altering the height is easier than altering the depth but the biggest issue is the door/drawer fronts unless you are custom making them or are willing to mess around with cutting those too.
AFIK, there are no stock doors or drawerfronts that will get you the 12 x 18 dimension but others here are more familiar with that than I.
If you plan to use IKEA doors vs. having something custom made, I would try and tweak your design to suit those dimensions.

Eek! My mistake. Nonetheless, I should still be able to rip the doors down with a tablesaw....

Re: ARKUM base cabinet cut to height?

Did you end up doing this project? I dare to modify bathroom cabinets for my bathroom... I will have to decrease the depth to 21" AND decrease the height by like 4"... So I'm curious - how did your project come out? Did you use a table saw? Was it hard?
Thanks!

Re: ARKUM base cabinet cut to height?

The project is going (or, ongoing, should I say). I did rip the first cabinet (the side cabinet that adjoins the vanity) and after cutting it to height, I was very content with the carcass. Then, I began to rip down the height of the door. It looked like crap. I had attempted to use the heat activated stuff to cover up the cut, exposed portion of the doors but it still looked like crap. Alas, making a trim piece and routed to match the bevel trim on the birch doors was more troublesome in time, effort and money. I decided to forego the idea and start anew, only adjusting the depth. I thought adjusting the depth was pretty straightforward and found my cordless circular saw was much more accurate than my tablesaw. The only catch is to redrill the dowel/catch hardware to the same depth using the cut piece as a template using clamps and whatnot. Just drill the sacrificial piece all the way through. Same goes with the pins used for shelving if you plan on using them too.
