cutting billy bookshelves

Hi all! I am looking at purchasing a few billy bookshelf but they are 0.5" to 1" too tall for the space I am working with. I was wondering if it is possible to saw this off from the bottom of the shelves and if anyone knows if this would create any problems. Your advice and expertise is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: cutting billy bookshelves

Just to be sure: you do realize that you will need more height than it takes for the actual billy clearance in order to stand them up after building them? You can build them standing up if you have help, but even so you would need a few inches to maneuver in when putting them together.

Yup, I realize this. The ceiling in the room is actually higher then where I plan on putting the bookshelves (under a bulkhead). So it is the bulkhead that would require about an inch to be taken off the shelves. Any idea if this can be done? I have tried finding similar posts but only found one where the person cut the whole bottom off. Any help here is greatly appreciated. I want to pull the trigger on buying these but need to make sure I can pull this off.

Re: cutting billy bookshelves

In fact you can do that, assuming that then you have enough space to fix the Billy shelf to the wall.

I did cut away the bottom piece of a Billy Shelf to use it on another project and I can assure you that is doable and the structure remains quiet sturdy.

is were I did cut the piece

And here

is the shelf once mounted.

You might want to find 4 very low feet to screw to the bottom section though, just to make cute

I did cut it, too. I made two low shelves out of one high shelve and put a table top on them. Now I use it as a working table.
You should also payattention to the back side. When you got a cover strip between the floor and wall you will maybe have to correct the little cut out on the bottom back...

My English isn't that good, so I hope you get what I mean!
