Play kitchen in progress...

Hello all, I love hacking IKEA furniture! Here are some teaser pics of the play kitchen I'm constructing from my daughters. The fridge and sink cabinets are Effektiv wall cabinets and the oven/stove is a hacked Aneboda night stand. When complete, all the burners will light up like the oven.

Oh, that's awesome! Might like to feature that on the homepage. How much would you estimate you've put into it so far? How did you get the oven to light up? What are the materials you've used other than the cabinets? Sorry to be nosy, but that's just TOO COOL!

Maybe you could do a tutorial step by step on how you did it. It looks so nice I might have to build one just like it.

Hi Susan,

Thank you for the kind words. It's funny you should ask about how much I've put into it so far. I just created a spreadsheet listing everything that I've used so far. The breakdown so far is $170 for IKEA pieces, $150 for hardware from Home Depot and various online vendors, $65 in electrical components (e.g., printed circuit board, potentiometers, LEDs, resistors, etc.),$15 in tax and shipping... for a grand total of approx. $400.

There are 8 red LEDs mounted inside of the oven that are connected to resistors on a small circuit board and then to the switch on the backsplash. For the burners, I'll be using 4 blue LEDs each to simulate the blue flame from natural gas burners. The lights will be connected to another circuit board which will be connected to the four dials in front, which are switched potentiometers (pots). The goal is to increase the light intensity of each burner the more you turn each dial to the right. This wasn't easy as the brightness of LEDs connected directly to pots don't increase linearly, so I had to teach myself some circuitry and use pulse-width-modulation to create a circuit that would allow me to achieve this. I'm waiting for the rest of my electrical components to come in the mail and will post pics when the kitchen is done (should be within a couple weeks).

Best,
George

Re: Play kitchen in progress...

Wow - that's truly amazing! I'd love to get a copy of your spreadsheet, your process and the final pictures for a frontpage feature. That's truly an amazing gift to your children, and sounds like to yourself as well!

Send me a PM (private message, just click on my name) when you're ready (if you don't mind). My own husband completely crushed 2 of his fingers when doing a project for our daughter about a week ago, so I've been a bit distracted of late, but I don't want to miss this!

Susan

Re: Play kitchen in progress...

Kinda puts the painted box I grew up with to shame (though it did have black knobs, red coil burners, etc....)
