Has anyone modified the Malm dressing table to reduce the height or add casters?
I prefere the height and casters of the MALM occasional table - but it does not have a drawer like the Malm dressing table. So I'm thinking about modifying the dressing table so I can have all three... reduced height, casters, and drawer.
I don't think the Malm series would be that easy to modify. The reason being is that they use a honeycomb construction on the insides and relying on a harder "frame" around the border. Such makes it lightweight and strong, but highly unsuitable to be cut-to-size.
I think you'll be better off getting the occasional table and adding drawers instead.
Narf is correct - you probably only have 1-2 inches of solid material at the bottom of those uprights.
Another factor here is that the dressing table should really be attached to the wall, to keep it from pitching forward on you when the drawer is opened.
oh that is so disappointing! I really like the drawer on that table. I'm not worried about the toppling issue.
Given the lack of solid material, it sounds like modifying either the occasional or the dressing table is not an opiton. Maybe I'll have to wait and see if IKEA combines them into one!
You can most likely pull off mounting drawers, but definitely not cutting down the dressing table.
Have you looked into just getting a drawer unit and putting it aside/under the table? Not the same as having a full-width one right underneath, but it's a storage solution, at least.
Just for IKEA Loss Prevention. But personally, I would be - it's an accident waiting to happen.
The honeycomb is also going to be a problem mounting drawers, due to the lack of solid material to screw into. This is a problem with some IKEA desks - folks want to install an undermount keyboard tray, which will only work with solid core material, like Galant.
We bought the Malm dressing table, with every intention of cutting down the legs. Then we got it home and realized we couldn't do so. I'm now using it with a stool for a seat. The nice part about the height is that it works great standing up also.
Thanks everyone for saving from a big surprise after buying it! For now - I've decided on the occasional table because it is has more flexible uses - I can use it at the end of the bed, roll it over the bed or put it against a wall under the mirror.
Just want to note that I did get the occasional table - it comes with the castors built in .. there is NO WAY I could have modified the dressing table to have the smoooth move ability that the built in castors have. The occasional table is great .. I don't think I'll even miss the drawer that is on the dressing table.
It is possible to modify the table. There is a project on the IKEA hacker blog where a guy did it to cut an Expedit shelf unit down from 8 compartments to 6.
Not saying it's easy to do, looked like a lot of work to me but it can definitely be done.
