Can Hopen Wardrobes be hacked?

Hi IkeaHackers!

Need some advice on a 'simple' Hopen hack.

Does anyone know if Hopen Wardrobes can be lowered?? ie, can the wardrobes be cut down at all - thats the only way i can install them into my bedroom.

There is a 2 inch 'plinth section' at the bottom of the wardrobes (nothing behind it but air), so this could be cut down - right???

Any ideas anyone!?

Please shout out!

Cheers

Re: Can Hopen Wardrobes be hacked?

Yep - I think the HOPEN units could be cut down no problem.

We have two HOPEN cabinets in our game room that we purchased late 2006. The plinth piece at the bottom is separate so all that would be required is cutting down the sides (and taking away the extra material that covers the space behind the plinth). Based on what I could see most hardware would also still be intact so no major structural modifications would need to happen. You probably would be okay with door clearance on the bottom even without the plinth if you have level floors.

If you need pics I can snap a few of ours installed with the plinth in place.

Gwen

P.S. Just confirmed with our HOPEN instructions that the cam bolts are through the bottom shelf support and the plinth piece is only installed with dowels so no major structural modifications would need to be made. So . . . the only mods you would need to do is cut down the two side pieces and trim off some on the back cover piece.

Re: Can Hopen Wardrobes be hacked?

Hi Gwen,

Thanks so much for your reply - really really appreciated it! :-)

As with most wardrobes i've put together (flat-pack stuff), the plinth only seems to act a cover for the hollow-area under the base, but as i hadn't seen the Hopen's dismantled, i thought i better check first.

Could i take you up on your offer of some pics with the plinth in place please - i believe this would really help me out.

Also, do you know if there are any Hopen installation instructions on this site (i've had a quick look but can't seem to find anything), basically i want to know how wide the actual plinth is - i've assumed around 2 inches, but i could be wrong - this will really help me calculate the lift required in order to getthe side panels upright, ready to install.

BTW: After reading you message, my wife is much happier now, she's basically fallen in love with this range and if i can install them she'll be over the moon!! :-)

So, thanks again Gwen!

Re: Can Hopen Wardrobes be hacked?

I know they were here before... ::sigh:: Anyway you can find them in the IKEAPedia Instructions section under HOPEN Wardrobe instructions.

Hope that helps?

Thanks James!

I'll get some pictures taken of the HOPEN in our gameroom later today and up by tonight.
