IKEA Seeks YOUR help! Tech help: Missing furniture

Hello everyone,

So it seems our wonderful community has found a workaround for a problem that we at IKEA haven't been able to reproduce on more than 3000+ clients.

The problem description is that you can't get a hold of all the different furniture items in the menu structure down to the lower left in the IKEA Homeplanner.
We've noticed that it's usually these range categories that are missing:
Freestanding units
VÄRDE
Appliances
Dining furniture
Wardrobes
Mirrors
The entire ADULT-section of Bedroom.

The workaround that's been found thanks to Byteck is a bit tricky and might involve a second computer where everything works on.
But we're really eager to hear from anyone else that is in the same situation to see if this works. If so then we have a lead to pursue here at IKEA to try and fix the problem.

Workaround from Byteck:
Go to the computer where the Homeplanner isn't working correctly.
Uninstall the “IKEA Homeplanner” from the Control panel.
Go into "C:\Program Files\" and double check that the folder IKEA Homeplanner is completely removed. If not check that you haven't saved any drawings in the folder then go ahead and delete it with all it content.
Restart the computer.

Go to your second computer where the IKEA Homeplanner is working correctly.
Locate the "IKEA Homeplanner"-folder in "C:\Program Files".
Copy the entire "IKEA Homeplanner"-folder(Aproximately 150 mb) on to a USB memory or something similar.
Paste the copied version to the computer that didn't display all the product choices.
Go into the folder and run the "IKEA Home Planner.exe"

Now check if the missing product choices in the menu have appeared.

If you don’t have a second computer it might be possible to by pass the problem still. Try to do the following and see if it gives any result.

Before uninstalling your current version of IKEA Homeplanner, go into “C:\Program Files” and make a copy of the “IKEA Homeplanner”-folder.
Then go ahead with uninstalling the planner as usual.
After this you should go into "C:\Program Files\" and double check that the folder “IKEA Homeplanner” is completely removed. If not check that you haven't saved any drawings in the folder then go ahead and delete it with all it content.
Restart the computer.

Now go into the “C:\Program Files”-folder again.
Locate the copy that you’ve made of the “IKEA Homeplanner”-folder.
Go into the folder and run the "IKEA Home Planner.exe"

Now check if the missing product choices in the menu have appeared.

As stated before, any feedback to this is really something that could help us at IKEA in finding the solution to the problem.
Please, if you’ve had this problem, take 10 minutes of your time to try the workarounds and post the result in this thread.
We really appreciate all feedback that we can get.

Last but not least, thanks again Byteck for your feedback. We really appreciate your help!

Best regards.

I use the Planner on an old PC that isn't used for much of anything else. I just reinstalled Windows XP from scratch and, ta daaa! All of the PAX wardrobes that hadn't been accessible are suddenly there. So the problem must have been with Windows.

Hi Dave,

Yes, this is what we're afraid of. If it's something with Windows then it's not that easy to "fix".
But I'm really looking forward to all feedback here, maybe we can do something at IKEA that can help our customers without having to reinstall Windows again.

Best regards

Re: IKEA Seeks YOUR help! Tech help: Missing furniture

Until a few days ago I had all the furniture but no microwaves for my fan cabinets. I've been forced to reinstall Windows on a new drive (bad RAM lead to Windows corruption lead to much drama and trauma). I have access to the old drive so I can still copy files from there though I can't run the programs that were installed.

When I finally get all of my updates and utility programs installed (sometime in the next century!), I'll be turning to the Ikea planner installer again. I'll be very curious to compare the two files I end up with!

Hi there
I'd be interested in creating a linux app similar to the ikea home planner. is there documentation about the data files that could be available ?

Hi sxpert,

No, unfortunately not. This application was developed by a Danish company back in 1998 so it's nothing that IKEA owns or has technical documentation on in that sense.

Best regards

Re: IKEA Seeks YOUR help! Tech help: Missing furniture

hadirijan, You asked me some time ago to try one of these workarounds on my system that was seeing the "missing furniture (Varde etc)" bug. Believe it or not I have not been able to restart my computer until yesterday, but I did the second workaround as part of that restart. Unfortunately it did not work - I still do not see the Varde and other furniture after copying the directory, uninstalling, rebooting and running the executable from the copied directory. I was not able to test the first workaround. Jeff

Hello Jeff,

Still I really appreciate your response, thanks so much for this.
If you have the chance to test the other workaround please let med know, I would really like to see if it's working.
If you don't have the possibility to arrange this perhaps I could upload a version of the planner that you could download and test?

Best regards

Re: IKEA Seeks YOUR help! Tech help: Missing furniture

Just to echo the person who tried the second workaround - no joy either for me. I was kind of hoping to plan some PAX cabinets for a bedroom using the homeplanner (running XP on my mac via VMware Fusion), but none of the bedroom furniture other than beds / bedside cabinets in the "Adult" category are showing.

Hope IKEA can work something out on the PAX planner front soon.
