IKEA Home planner: Anyone know how to use fractions ?

As an exercise, and to give me some experience with the planner , I'm building our daughter's room so we can see how the loftbed we're going to woodbridge to look at tomorrow will fit. But I'm running into problems figuring out some of the planner quirks. Luckily, I know just where to go for help!

So, fractions:

If I try putting in 21.5" it changes it to 215" if I try and put in 21 1/2" it changes it to 394".

Does the planner only work in whole numbers? That makes things a bit hard.

Also running into a problem putting a simple BOX shape in that's not attached to a wall. I can use an "innerwall" to add things that are attached directly to a wall, but if it's freestanding I don't see a way to do something with exact dimensions?

Thanks in advance for any tips/suggestions anyone has!

James

Re: Anyone know how to use fractions in the planner?

Yep, whole numbers only and no interior freestanding elements (people use "heaters" for lots of stuff but I don't THINK they can be freestanding--I'm not in front of the planner right now). Maybe the new platform will be more flexible?

Re: IKEA Home planner: Anyone know how to use fractions ?

Well at least I'm not going crazy in isolation .

Well, that's mildly crazy. How on earth are you supposed to work with a plan if the element is 12 1/2 inches? If you're stacking 6 side by side you're GOING to be off by 3" one way or the other?!

I've always had the great respect for the folks here that can make the planner do what they want, but I have to admit that it wasn't respect enough! ::doffs hat::

It's a great system, but really hard to work with if you're trying to do more than a rough-in of the design.

It would also be soooooo much easier to work with if it would just use a single measurement value. They way it keeps doing *some* things in straight inches and others in a mixture of feet and inches is highly annoying. I think it would be a lot easier to work with if it would just stick with total number of inches and stop converting some things to feet.

So here's hoping the next version wows us all!

But, no pressure hadirajan.

Re: IKEA Home planner: Anyone know how to use fractions ?

Try using one of "your own appliance" choices for a free standing part of the room. Try making three of the items 13" and three 12" - at least the total might be right - I'm not sure if that helps. Maybe the thinking is that most rooms are so big that 1/2" is not a relevant distinction? By the way, how do you make paragraphs in a post like this one? I try using the space bar but it often get messy somehow.

Re: IKEA Home planner: Anyone know how to use fractions ?

Good idea. .

I didn't actually need to do it for Elizabeth 's room, just thinking about it like an application developer. I think I got her room more or less sorted out, which reminds me I need to go post it in the Kids room forum.

As for paragraphs, just hit the "Enter" key twice at the end of the paragraph and it should give you a blank line.

Easier than using fractions of inches in the planner!

Re: IKEA Home planner: Anyone know how to use fractions ?

Well once again you've solved everything without me not even having to go in with a comment. Good work guys and great that you're all helping out.
As for fractions, this is loosely base on the fact that the planner wasn't intended to be used with imperial measurements from the very start. This has been implemented a couple of years after the initial concept was done. So unfortunately we still have some strange problems with the measurement for US and Canada.

And thanks for not putting any pressure on us Tigratrus, we're actually discussing this very much for the new planner. But here we have the upper hand since it's a Canadian company doing the Planner engine.

Best regards

Re: IKEA Home planner: Anyone know how to use fractions ?

Great to hear!

Thanks for shedding some light on the background... I had a feeling it might be something like that, the way the feet/inches conversions were happening seemed like a result of a modification to an underlying system that didn't really support it.

Just like to say again, how much we all appreciate your involvement! Can't wait for the next version!

I know the US uses imperial measurement,
but Canada switched to metric ages ago.
Why wouldn't the forthcoming planner be metric for Canada? Oh, and I'm really looking forward to running it on my Mac!
