Yes, we're of course very much aware of the situation today, not everybody owns a PC or runs Windows on it. This has been taken into consideration for the new tool.
The new planner will be a web based system that is accessible through IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari etc. So hopefully this will solve a lot of the problem there.
And with Ubuntu gaining grounds this should be a future thing as well.
When it comes to wallpaper or color and flooring, this was actually possible in old versions of the planner. However usability tests showed that a lot of the users ended up spending too much time with making a exact replica of their room so some testers didn't even start to look at the furniture. So that was disabled pretty early on to get the customers more into the important part and the core idea of the planner.
However, we know that times have changed and today people are more used to planning tools such as our Homeplanner. So with the new IKEA Homeplanner it will be possible both to change the roof, floor and wall colors and also to do some flooring.
There will hopefully also be a better support for archways and more door and window styles in the final product.
I hope this shows a bit more that we're trying to meet some of the common questions from our most important users, namely you our beloved customers.
With an archway, and two open-wall "doorways", this is great news. I love that we'll be able to change the colours too. I hope we can work with shading, so we can get closer approximations to the actual colour for choosings woods, etc. It would be nice to see if this colour door front goes with that colour wall.
Oh, and don't forget a way to add a backsplash. It doesn't even have to be different materials, as long as it has the abiltiy to make different shades of colour.

Hello,
As IKEA is looking into including our own flooring in the planner, the textures and materials will be as close to the real thing as possible. So hopefully you'll be able to notice the difference.
When it comes to floors or wall paint from other companies, this is hard to replicate in our planner.
Backsplashes is getting more and more common so here IKEA will have a nice product range to choose from as well.
We know that this is a request that some users have, however as it looks right now we're only going to have the online version.
But keep in mind that we use the planner in our stores and it's a very important tool, so perhaps we'll be able to see some kind of offline capability in the future as well.

First, please NO , not a web based planner... I much prefer a download and install in .DEB format.

You need to test in Konqueror, KDE based distros which is all I use and this is the KDE browser. I do not use any of the other ones. If it doesn't work in Konqi, I move on.

Well thats good, but I would look to back up a little, and support the "mother linux" of many of these. Debian. xbunutus and its deriviatives are all based on Debian.
Produce a .DEB and .RPM installer and you've covered many of the best distros out there.
Be desktop/WM agnostic. Don't tie your product to one WM
ie
: KDE or gnome or XFCE, etc..
Another item on linux is:
Do NOT even think about going the C#/Mono route.. You will kill your product off in the Linux community quicker than you can blink.... Use Qt, Gtk, C/C++ etc..
Moving to Java would give you write once, compile for many ability from Linux to Mac to win.
And just to prove I am not here just to snipe off comments.... You want a Linux tester, send it my way. I will gladly test it.
