You don't need the slats... unless you don't have a boxspring. You need something solid under the mattress to keep it in place. If you don't own a boxspring you'll need to get the slats. If you're buying a new mattress the slats are cheaper than a new boxspring, but your mattress will be a bit lower to the ground.
