A month after completing the last one (a 6+ month long DIY project), I got pregnant with twins so we had to move to a bigger house. Using IKEA cabinets was a consideration then but space was tight and we had to be very precise so we couldn’t come up with a configuration that worked. Plus, my husband wasn’t convinced that IKEA doesn’t have to mean contemporary but I’m working on him now about that issue.
We will be turning a poorly laid out U-shaped kitchen with 30 year old (crappy) cabinets into an extra wide galley with a small peninsula, and we’ll be doing it in stages. Phase 1 will be adding a 6 foot span of cabinets to the eating area that will house things in preparation for phase 2 which includes tearing down a built in pantry, bumping the wall out by up to 24”, relocating the range and adding usable drawers.
Depending on how well phase 2 goes, we may or may not take on the other half of the kitchen right after that. Part of what prompted the idea to remodel the kitchen is that we have an addition going on, which includes a new laundry room and office and we needed to sort out flooring. So, here we are, having gone from living with this kitchen until the kids are in school to practically gutting it in a week’s time when we really should be spending that time on the addition.
