My IKEA: USA-Chicago:Schaumburg
Hello From St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri

Hello all, I was Googling for some Ikea ideas and stumbled upon this website. I tried to view some images but I couldn't unless I registered so here I am.

My girlfriend and I just bought a house, and I was looking to add more Ikea pieces to our place. I collect lots of different things so I had already been familiar with Ikea stuff for displays. My girlfriend is originally from Chicago, so we drive up there and stay with her folks often, and a few times we made it out to the Ikea in Schaumburg and it was a mind blowing experience. I had gone there looking for display cabinets and a new desk but didn't count on falling in love with Swedish Meatballs and Lingonberry sauce!

I had bought 2 Detolf cabinets in black-brown, 3 Billy bookcases in black-brown, 2 sets of the Billy Morebo doors (4 doors total) for the 2 wide Billy bookcases, and a Galant desk in birch veneer. I love it all and it worked out well for me in my 1 bedroom apartment.

Now we have the house, much more space, and we want to give some of our living a little more of an upgrade. So we are heading up to Ikea the next two weekends to get a boat load more stuff. We are looking for a wardrobe (a PAX unit) a new bed and bedside tables (I'm thinking MALM) a midsize cabinet that I can use as a TV stand in the master bedroom, and some large units in the living room to hold DVDs. We have ALOT of DVDs and 2 Billys can barely hold them all, but I have some ideas.

Just thought I would do the requisite introduction before I scour the forums for posts and pictures. Glad to see a community like this out in the world, thanks for putting it together.

Re: Hello From St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri

Welcome from all the way over in South County. Don't forget to pick-up some lingonberry sauce while you're there to bring home. Great on waffles or pancakes!! I must say, it was sticker shock the first time we visited Schaumburg because of the prices in the area. But, IKEA is worth the trip.

If you get a chance, take some pics. of the kitchen displays. We're all mad around here for more pics.!!!!!

Re: Hello From St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri

Hello there. South County residents here as well. My wife and I went to the Bolingbrook store in the fall for our first IKEA experience. What a great time we had! Is the Schaumburg store that much better? We are hoping to go again this spring sometime. Is it worth the extra 1/2 hour drive??

Re: Hello From St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri

It's a much larger store, so it's definitely worth the trip. More kitchen displays, etc. It didn't seem like it was a half-hour further, but maybe so. There's a toll highway getting into Schaumburg. I spent about 8 hours at the store and I didn't get around to seeing an entire floor!!! Perhaps because I camped out in the kitchen displays most of the day.

Re: Hello From St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri

Thanks for the warm welcomes!

Sorry I did not take any pictures, we were busy with figuring out what we wanted to get and what we wanted to wait on. And what's the deal with all of the kitchen fascination here? I just noticed that, you guys know there is much more in Ikea than kitchen stuff right?

Well $1600 later we are back home with a few new items, now to put it all together. Came home with a PAX wardrobe, some BESTA cabinets for my DVDs and the MALM bed frame with bedside tables and a new mattress.

Smile Re: Hello From St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri

Hey, I noticed this thread might be a little stale by now, but I was happy to see that there are more fans out there from the St. Louis area, specifically St. Charles.

My wife and I (mostly I) have nearly finished our kitchen remodel, and it has gone wonderfully. I took a truck to Bolingbrook a little more than two months ago, and came back with everything for our kitchen. Since then its been a nearly daily effort, but it is looking great, and we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

I guess I might ask if anyone from St. Louis going to Bolingbrook soon? I had everything ready for my Domjso sink to be installed, but, *gasp* I cracked a small section of the rear corner. Obviously, it's a long drive, but it might be what I have to do to get a new sink.

But, if anyone is going to go to the Bolingbrook IKEA, and would like some gas money, AND would be willing to pick up a Domsjo sink for me, well, let's just say that my wife would be extremely happy.

Re: Hello From St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri

toongoon - I would like to pick up my cabinets just like you did. I have the kitchen completely designed and know exactly what I need at IKEA. I called IKEA customer service and they said if I want to pick up the order in the store, then I need to place the order in the store. Is that true or did I get some bad info? Do I really have to make two trips? Is there no way to place an order via phone or fax and then pick it up.

Hi, MtnDew,

Glad there's another brave soul out there like me. What I first did to place an order with the Bolingbrook store, was to give them a phone call. They put me in touch with one of their sales people in the kitchen department who was then able to give me some help. First of all, yes, I did need to send them my order. This was done by faxing a printout of the cost sheet that you can generate in the in the IKEA kitchen designer. The sales rep I worked with was very helpful, and for that, I don't see any reason why they would require you to order in person. Once I placed the order, they also sent me emails confirming the order, which I had to confirm again with them, as well as a pickup date.

When it came time to pickup my kitchen, the rep I worked with on the phone/email wasn't available, but someone else stepped in to take care of things, without any problems. You might find, as I did, that they can give you some additional advice on your kitchen, which cannot be planned for explicitly in the planning tool. They'll have a better idea of how much toe kick you'll need, and will advise you on areas where it would be wise to pick up an extra set of some things, so you don't have to return for another trip. We loaded up, and were on our way after a couple of hours.

If it weren't for my own problems, there is no reason I would have had to return to IKEA after the first trip. So if things are planned correctly, I don't see any reason why more than one trip should be necessary. Unless, of course, you crack your domsjo sink. I eventually returned, and IKEA replaced the sink, no questions asked. Now that is some awesome customer service.

I still have a few things to complete in the kitchen, but everything has gone up beautifully. There are struggles here and there, so take your time.

I don't know what number you used to call, but this is how I reached the Bolingbrook kitchen dept - 630-972-7900 ext 1925.

Good luck. I hope you have a great experience.
