Thumbs up Long way from HOME. Orlando NOW -Germany THEN

Hi.
I am Jennifer. Have been working for IKEA for 12 years now in Germany but moved to Orlando Fl in 2005. (still working for my german IKEA boss through PC) Anyway I helped out in the NEW Orlando store for a few weeks but IKEA US can NOT be compared with Europe.

Well, if anyone feels like talking then just email me or message me.

I will have to navigate through this forum in order to see whats up......

See you all around.

Jen

Re: Long way from HOME. Orlando NOW -Germany THEN

thanks for welcoming me.....

ok here a little input about ikea usa...
first off ikea usa westcoas and eastcoast (NY) are wayyyyyyyyy different from the rest of other ikeas in usa.

i think that people are just not familiar with ikea especialy down here in florida.

CS is not the same. IKEA EUROPE are more teamplayers to me.
I think it has a lot to do with pay here in usa though...

there is much more and i will give some more input in time.
if u have any questions then pls ask away...

I get the impression that retailing is strictly regulated in Germany and workers are treated better--things like being represented on corporate boards of directors. Florida is a perfect example of a US low-wage economy.

Unions are not illegal in Florida, but state law is hostile and it's essentially impossible to organize retail workers (unlike in California or Oregon).

what do u mean by -strictly regulated ?
and yes workers get treated better in every way.

but ikea usa is different from overseas. ikea europe is like family.
ikea usa is like an oriental bazar or something.....
workers have no knowledge neither do they care. its all about money...

I think Dave's point is that workers have less invested so they don't care as much. They don't think they'll keep their jobs very long. They may also receive a lot less training.

I think Germany, like Pennsylvania of 40 years ago, regulates store opening hours. The loss of "blue laws" of the Pennsylvania variety greatly altered retailing in the US. And yes, workers in Florida tend to assume their jobs are temporary. Publix supermarkets are an exception.
