The $172,000 quote came back in those naive, happy days when we had dreams of blowing out the back wall for a lovely, light-filled addition. I had all sorts of pretty drawings and spent my time debating, "Built-incabinetry for that wall,or oversized french china cabinet?" HA!
Since then I've gotten quotes of $70-80K that don't even involve changing the footprint. It's insane. Oh, and we invested all our set-aside "kitchen money" in a company my husband's starting... so that kind of hurt the budget a bit, too.
This is my 2nd attempt to write an intro (I hate it when the browser erases everything after an error message) so I'll be brief.
I live in Chicago, near the Schaumburg Ikea, but it nevertheless tookme 4 months of getting $20K bids for cabinets from so-called "semi-custom" cabinet companies (Brookhaven, Crestwood, Kraftmaid) before I turned to Ikea.
Now my Ikea kitchen measurer is coming next week, but I want to have a design before he arrives. The kitchen addition is *huge* so lots of room (for error).
I'm heading off to the 'help me with my design' forum now . . .
Hi! I was around a long time ago and here I am, back again! Still no new kitchen. We were going to do it this fall (after a year delay), but we just had to have a new furnace *and* A/C installed, so there went the kitchen budget!
So now we've slated it for spring '07. I suppose it's a good thing we waited because I really like the new Brown-Black doors (like everyone, it seems). I'm also going to try to convince my husband to at least consider doing PAX in our MBR and maybe our daughter's room. We live in a condo that is short on good storage space, so that might be an easy sell. Or not. :?

My name is Vicki and I live in Florida - where.....we have no IKEA. Although, we should have our first in a year.
I have been an IKEA fanatic for so many years. Every time we go somewhere for vacation we visit an IKEA in that city. People think we're crazy (my husband and I). I have been to IKEAs in foreign countries as well as in the US. It's all good.
I'm a little overwhelmed with all the information on the website. Tomorrow I am going to look through it all as I am getting ready to remodel my master bathroom and have wanted to try to use kitchen cabinetry from IKEA for this project.
Hi Vicki! Welcome to the forums! We're glad you found us!
I'm going to merge your post with our 1000+ members post so that everyone will see it -- and you can read up on all of us, too...

Just thought I would introduce myself here. My name is Sara and My husband, Matt, and I are redoing our kitches starting 9/25/06 using Ikea cabinets. We are a bit behind schedule but are determined to be ready by then. We decided to go with a 30 inch sink counter and forego a double sink. We are still planning on doing an undermount though. Now our biggest question is if we can stack base cabinets on top of each other? We have a 12 inch space to work with (between the wall and the refrigerator)and there are no high cabinets that come in 12 inches, so we were thinking we could stack some base cabintes on top of each other....
Also, has anyone found an undermount sink that has two bowls (one very small) that will fit in a 30 inch sink base cabinet?
Thanks.
Oh yeah, we live in Mpls and are only 10 minutes from the Bloomington Ikea (thankfully!)
Who knows when I first fell in love with IKEA, I think my brother introduced me via a catalog over 10 years ago. Regardless, it was love at first sight.
I put my first IKEA kitchen in 3 years ago (2003), when we moved to Miami Beach, FL. We bought the pieces at the Elizabeth, NJ store. Our movers picked them up 4 days later, as they had to drive past the IKEA warehouse on their way down I-95 from our house in Massachusetts.
The boxes arrived; we put the pieces together (2 hour's work); hung the wall cabinets (1 hour - without a ladder); positioned the base cabinets (10 minutes); slid our appliances in place (2 minutes); and waited for Home Depot to make the template for the granite counter and install it(6 weeks).
Then, in 6 months or so, I'll put one in my mountain house.
I will post pictures of my first IKEA kitchen when I can find them on my husband's computer. It is a NEXUS/AVSIKT combo - tiny, but extremely efficent.
It's nice to meet all of you. I have already read many of your posts and I feel priviledged to be in your company. You are very knowledgable and willing to help others achieve their visions.
I hope my membership can be helpful to someone.

I tried to upload the pictures but the system wasn't cooperating, so I'm just posting the URLs.
We now have a shelf next to the frig which I made from an 80" NEXUS cover panel and an IKEA shelf bracket set. I'll take a picture of it and post it when I can.
