Hi everyone:

Just learned that in Canada our Kitchen event has been extended to 19November...

I am seriously spending too much time at the store etc and believe I am now addicted to everything IKEA. Our kitchen started with the Rationell pull out wire shelf that fits under a sink to hold detergent etc.....and expanded to renovating the whole kitchen when it didn't fit in the old cabinet properly.

When the kitchen is done I will attempt to post photos.

Lynda

LHurdis, this is the funniest thing I've heard today! Thanks. It's funny because that's something I would do. I can't wait for the pics.

Hi, I'm a new member here and figured I'd introduce myself. My husband and I have been working an entire house renovation (literally - the house was nothing but the studs for a while) since April. Our house was built in 1949, it's 1.5 stories and about 1600 square feet, not including the full basement. Anyways, we have finally reached the point that we can put our kitchen in! We have already built all of cabinet frames, they are sitting in the dining room awaiting install.

Thus, I am here to learn all about other people's experiences! We live in Northern British Columbia, so any Ikea is about an 8 hour drive away (so sad, we love Ikea!)...and we only own a small car...so we ordered our kitchen by email and fax, and had it shipped all the way from Quebec! Even with the shipping costs (about $600) it was cheaper and better than any other option. Especially because we received $400 in gift certificates with our order....

Anyways, just wanted to say hi

Welcome....I hope you find the site a much fun as I have. There is so much information here it is at times overwhelming. We did not install ourcabinets ourselves and I feel so guilty seeing overyone else DYI....but found all the hints and discussions very useful in deciding what to do with my kitchen.

The IKEA gift cards have been great....bought pretty well all of my interior fittings with them. They have made the whole expense thing easier to swallow.

Still waiting for our contertop which had to be special ordered...thus backordered from the manufacturer in the US - we chose PIONITE "Rock this Town" as it looked like granite without the high price tag.Mirrors are going on the wall behind the cooktop and I am looking at glass tiles to go over the counter on the otherside (Maybe).

Good luck on your home reno...you are so brave to take on that hugh job...I am going crazy without my kitchen and can't imagine surviving without the rest of my house.

saying hello!

I don't think I ever posted an introduction. Love the new site!
My name is Helen and I live in Southern British Columbia, Canada. I have 2 Ikeas close to me- I live the same distance from both. I've always loved Ikea, but only in the past year have I considered an Ikea kitchen. We bought our house nearly 2 years ago. It was built in 1979-80 in a lovely area of our town. The location is perfect as it is steps from the school and close to everything we need.
The down side is that we want to change nearly everything in the house! It was vintage 1979 when we moved in. Horrible original light fixtures, yuckky wallpaper (I've just finished scraping off the last of it) and a dusty rose coloured carpeting in 2 rooms which I can't wait to get rid of. It does have nice hardwood flooring in most of the house and most of the layout works for us. It is a nice size (2500 sq ft) so we have room to stretch out a little.

My pet peeve is the kitchen layout. The kitchen is part of a large family room area, but is sectioned off with a useless wall and peninsula. So when 2 people are in the kitchen you are bumping into each other and if the dishwasher is open-- nobody can move so traffic stops and waits till it closes again. The cabinets are old fashioned and painted (poorly) white. The range is jammed in the corner against a wall so it is difficult to comfortably cook in front of it. All the fixtures are out-dated and I'm sure original to the house. The dishwasher is our favorite thing, as it is new and quiet and works great! I just wish it weren't white because our new kitchen will have stainless appliances. It might have to be mis-matched for a while because I hate to get rid of the one thing that we like in the kitchen!!

We are still waiting to decide how we can finance the kitchen reno. We will be taking down a wall, closing in a doorway, and widening another doorway, moving the range and the dishwasher and adding an island. We will be nearly doubling our cabinet space and getting rid of the useless soffits so we can use 39" uppers. I'm so excited about getting the big pull out pantries too! Right now all our large items like cereal boxes are on top of the fridge because we have no cabinet that will hold them. It quite attractive...LOL! I'm looking at getting cork flooring because I LOVE the idea of a warm floor that is soft underfoot. My legs ache with standing on the hard tiles for too long.

Dreaming of my Adel Medium Brown kitchen....hope we can start next year....in the meantime I will continue to stalk everyone else's progress and drool over the pictures. I love this site. It has helped me so much already!

Hello Everyone! I am so happy to find this site. I stumbled across it awhile ago when considering Ikea for our kitchen. I just came across it again now that we are in the midst of building our Ikea kitchen.
I am a HUGE fan of Ikea. I lived awhile in AZ, and was in withdrawl from not being able to go as often. I planned 6 hr road trips to visit the one in San Diego. Now I am back in NJ, and within a close drive of an Ikea again. Such relief!
I love Ikea because it is practically the only place that you can get great modern designs at prices you can afford. Design shouldn't be only for the elite and rich.

Well, we already purchased our Adel Medium Brown cabinets. Currently have most of the uppers on the walls. I cannot wait till it's finished. I'm looking forward to spending time on this message board!

Alydev -- nice to get to know more about you! You'll love cork flooring! I know I still love mine a year and a half later, even though it hasn't installed its quarter-round at the baseboards yet.

kinetic -- Welcome! I understand IKEA withdrawal. We used to live 20 minutes from IKEA and I drove past it everyday on my way to and from work. It's about the only reason I regret moving from Northern Virginia to a sleepy little town - my IKEA is 1 1/2 hours away now!! WAA!

Glad you have joined us, and we're looking forward to following your progress!

Susan

Just a quick hello from little old me here in Maryland. I've got three IKEA's that I frequent - Woodbridge, VA, Baltimore, MD, and College Park, MD - and I love their stuff. Have for quite some time now. I just moved into a small but cute(!) one-bedroom apartment, and seriously IKEA is pretty much the only way to go. I'm in a mini-competition with my friend in Austria to see who can decorate with the most IKEA stuff without it be 'over-IKEA' (if there is such a thing).

I just got an incredible deal: the 8-drawer Hemnes dresser in white for TEN DOLLARS, so I've been trying to recapture the magic with more frequent trips to IKEA than usual. LOL I actually stumbled upon this site because we'd gone to pick up additional pegs for my Expedit shelving unit and had a momentary crisis on peg size, so I was looking for advice on-line, and boom! - there you guys were.

Anyway, I've rambled on enough. This looks like a fun place to gain some interesting tidbits. I'm not at the remodeling phase for kitchens, but I figure if you guys even appreciate the cheap $1.00 IKEA breakfasts, then you can't be half bad!

Take care!
Gretchen
