Another New Member;)

Hi- I'm happy to have found this site.

Ikea opened a store here in CT where I fell in love with their kitchens. I'm renoing my condo-bit by bit since I work a lot. I chose bamboo for my floors and Akurum cabinets with Ulriksdal fronts.

I watched the cd a few times but couldn't find the instructions for installations that were shown and referred to on that cd. I went to the store and was told they do not exist (?) I called Ikea CS and was told oh yes they do-but when CS transferred me to the store the person I spoke to in kitchens told me they have Never had them, he has Never seen them and that I should just take notes from the cd.

I am competant enough with home repairs and maint but I want to be sure I fully understand what I'm doing-or about to do. There is always something that needs to be changed or adjusted. I have already changed my layout because my new fridge is deeper than I allowed for.

I want to hang my WC, have the floor installed, then install the BC. The carpenter who was to install the floor has injured himself so I need to replace him. I -could- do it myself but i decided to install it on an angle and don't want to do all that cutting. Smarter to hire it out I think.

So-my first question-do those instructions exist? Are they here in a form I can print? Inquiring minds ya know.

As for the rest of the project-the main floor of my 3 level condo is my kitchen-living room and separated by a 55" wide wall-painted red. That is where the S/S slide-in, dual fuel range and microvent will go-flanked by door/drawer BC and solid door WC.

The side walls are a golden yellow, the front and rear walls are a pale yellow, the ceiling is cream -I want to add a simple crown molding. The ceiling is 8' high at the entry and rises to 12' at the back of the room.

I had chosen LG countertops Celebration which is black with colored "confetti" in it but I discovered there is a company here in town that does granite and marble so I may check there for remnants before I decide.

The painting is done, I need to do some touch ups on the ceiling, (I removed the popcorn finish) I have my appliances, I'm interviewing flooring installers and I have the name of a guy to install my range once the floors are in-the rest I can do myself.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Hello out there! After the initial few months of exploratory planning, I think it's finally happened -- we have realized that we are IKEA people with an IKEA budget and IKEA style and we need an IKEA kitchen. We looked into a number of different lines and so many were disappointing on design or out of reach on price. We aren't in emergency-level need of a new kitchen, but we want to do it in time to enjoy it ourselves for the rest of the decade that we hope to get out of this house. And to go through the construction pain while we still have just one kid.

We want to do something modern and fun and stylish that gives us a lot more storage space and built-ins than our current kitchen has -- to maximize the small space in our 1949/1954 house. Yes, I'm working on that mission statement!

I have spent countless hours on here reading and I hope we will actually get the project mobilized early in the spring. I am nuts about this site. The whole kitchen thing would be so much less fun without it.

Smile Happy to be here

I found this site -- luckily! -- a few months ago, and I've been posting, but I never introduced myself. I live in a small split-level outside of Chicago, and I have dreamed about adding on to it since the day we bought it 8 years ago. Now the two girls are solidly in elementary school, and starting to take showers, and the lone male -- my husband -- finally agrees we need our own bathroom. We're adding a master suite above the living room, dining room and kitchen (using Ikea kitchen cabs for the vanity), we're redoing the first floor (new bamboo floors, ripping out a wall, adding a vented gas fireplace, changing and adding and replacing windows, and redoing the kitchen), and we're replacing the siding and windows throughout the house.

When we thought we could afford to bump out the back and add much-needed space to the kitchen, my husband firmly refused to consider an Ikea kitchen. We've bought a ton from Ikea over the years, of varying quality, and he has grown tired of it (I never have). When we realized we had to keep our 9x13 kitchen, I convinced him to go with Ikea for budgetary reasons. I'm so excited! Of course, my two favorite doors are Nexus BB (sales stop) and Hallarum (discontinued), so that's an obstacle, but I figure we're saving so much on the kitchen, we might spring for some custom doors in the end.

We're not breaking ground until March 2007 at the earliest. I'm hoping to do Nexus BB base cabs with white Eco-Cem countertops and Abstrakt white wall cabs in the kitchen. The bathroom vanity was going to be Hallarum with the same Eco-Cem countertop, but now I'm obviously thinking it over.

This has been an invaluable site already! Thank you to everybody!

A tiny kitchen with big plans

Right off the bat I want to thank all the regulars here for their great input! This forum is like having a knowledgeable (but very busy) team to help me undertake a kitchen project.

I bought a small home (in the Berkshires of Massachusetts) about a year ago. I've been slowly bringng it into the 21st Century, hopefully without losing any of its 1920 "shotgun cottage" meets "craftsman" charm.

The kitchen was redone in 1950 with Youngstown cabinets which still look and function quite well. But I have my eye on something more in keeping with my taste.....if I can only figure out wht that is.

Hello from Colorado

Hi!

I'm Constance, and we're in Colorado, where Ikea has not yet made it, so any purchases have to be online, or we have to make a pretty long drive (currently about 1000 miles to Arizona or Houston, but we really don't go to Texas if we can avoid it). Apparently, the trip is about to be halved (yay!) sometime in the spring, with the Draper UT store.

We're thinking about sharing a house with friends; the garden level is larger than the house I currently live in, so if we can sell this one, we'll do it. The garden level needs a kitchen; right now it has a very nice wet bar, but man cannot live by microwave alone. So it will be a rather extensive reno. The space for a kitchen is about 8 feet wide by 16 feet long, so a galley it is. We're looking at Udden because it seems to be the most functional for our uses.

Anyway, I'll probably be asking a lot of questions about getting Ikea to have what we need in stock, since a 16 hour round trip isn't something to be done at the drop of a hat...

And thanks already for the resources and photos. They're really helpful.

I love lamps

I am from the US and new here and would like to ask if anyone knows where I could buy the Koppla 10 channel dimmer lighting control. Or a different product that functions similarly.
Thanks

I'm not doing an IKEA kitchen but I'm still a fan of their stuff. We're hoping to add IKEA storage systems in a couple bedrooms as well as a closet that's under the staircase.

I'm in the midst of remodelling a kitchen, two baths and laundry room. We're doing a part DIY part hiring important subs like plumber, electrician and drywall.

I have two young teens in school, one little pooch that's been sick and in my real life was a teacher. I do some subbing when I have time, but remodelling is taking all my extra time so I'm off for this semester.

Been here awhile asking poor Eva and Darwin for help, but haven't posted much. Maybe you all will see more if me in the coming weeks, months, years (REMODELLING)...YIKES.

Just a quick welcome to everyone to say, "Glad you're here". Lot's of info. to absorb here.

Constance, I've never been to Colorado (well, I haven't been much of anywhere!) and have always wanted to go. Perhaps some day. I hear it's beautiful.
