Well folks, we've crossed another milestone. It took us 8 months, 10 days to reach 500 members (June 18, 2005 - February 28, 2006), then only 3 months, 20 days to gain another 500 (February 28, 2006 - June 20, 2006). Now, a short 3 months, 10 days later, and we've reached another 1000 members! We're growing by leaps and bounds! Who knew there were so many IKEAFANS?
Anyway, this is the place to introduce yourselves... not a requirement, but it is nice to put a story with a name, and to think that you all have some idea of who we allare.
I'll start: I'm Susan, your friendly administrator. My husband (Tigratrus aka Tigger) and I put IKEA akurum kitchen cabinets in our breakfast room a year and a half ago, although we've been fans of IKEA for sometime. We're planning (always planning) a kitchen reno and in the meantime, we hang out here. One of us is almost always here if you need any help, or we're just an email away.
And you?
Oh, hey...don't forget to catch up on the 500 member thread, and the 1000 member thread. Enjoy the forums, and don't forget to come up for air!
Blow the trumpets!!! 2,000 members! Wow! By this time next year there will be 5,000 although some who have not logged in since their first visit or two you may wish to eliminate.
Thank you, Susan, for all of your hard work. Hopefully, with all the knowledge you've gained from this site you will get your kitchen soon...and it will be awsome.
Shouva, I did some quick calculations and found that the membership has doubled every 3 (or so) months -- it was at 125 exactly one year ago today, and took less than 2 months to double to 250 (November 24, 2005). Since then it has doubled approximately every 3 months -- 500 on February 28, 2006, 1000 on June 20, 2006 and 2000 on October 2, 2006. So...if that trend continues (and it has for a year) we'll be at 4000 in January and should hit 5000 soon thereafter!
But it can't keep increasing exponentially, can it? Boggles the mind....
Hello Hello!! Hi, my name is Paula. I'm about to buy my first home ever!! I am so excited. It's an ugly duckling and with some love it will be a swan. Great bone structure. My biggest obsession is the kitchen. Not sure why because I don't cook . I think it's the ugliest kitchen ever ! There's a lot of alternatives I have been considering to make it a beauty. IKEA makes the most sense to me. I have been to the show rooms a billion times to make sure it's what I really want and it is. I want the Adel medium brown. It's so beautiful. Plus it's one of the ones that is kept in stock. I'm trying to redo my kitchen as cheap as possible. What I want to do is:
1 - There's a company in Mesa, AZ that will come and rip out my kitchen for free if I give them my old cabinets. And they can have them!
2 - I will paint the kitchen myself. Navajo white.
3 - I want to hire an electrician to install an eyeball light above my sink.
a - I will change the ugly floresent light with track lighting myself.
b - I will install the under cabinet lighting when I install my cabinets myself.
4 - I will buy Adel medium brown and take home myself. No delivery or shipping charges.
5 - Put together the cabinets myself.
6 - I have a couple of handy-men friends that are willing to help me put up the cabinets for beer and food.
a - I'm going to have to hire someone to come in and do a tricky corner for me. It's at an angle and he'll have to cut the cabinet.
7 - I'm keeping my appliances which are white. The only one I'm replacing is the stove. It has the old fashioned coil. The condo was built in 2002 so they're fairly new yet.
8 - I'm going top it off with LG's Hi Mac countertops. It's just over half the price of Corian but has a 15 year transferable warrenty.
9 - Flooring I'm undecided about. Suggestions?
So there. It's a rough draft of my plan.
A lady at IKEA is the one that told me about this site. I'm so glad it's here and I'll find out from experienced IKEANS.
No image, all I get with two loadings of the forum is a big solidblack square. Clicking on it didn't help either. Susan, you know I am computer challenged, so.....Help!
Hot Java...regarding your paint color. Navajo white was the standard builder color for about 25 years or more. I'll bet the creative people here will come up with other suggestions that would be stunning with Adel Medium brown. Just give us some clues as to what your color scheme is for the rest of the house, what color of LG counter top you are considering etc.
I don't think I can help...I'm seeing a big black square also! Paula, can you try again?
And welcome! It's great to hear about your project, and that you heard about the site from someone at the store -- was it an employee, or a customer? Anyway, sounds like you'll have your hands full, but also that you can handle it. Congrats on the first house purchase! It's exciting and scary all at the same time, isn't it?
Could the lady at Ikea have been Eva shopping? Doesn't she live in Arizona?
Paula-HotJava--welcome! This is a great group. I finished my kitchen (less that dratted 5%) back in August and still keep coming back, and am thinking of new projects. Your choices sound great, though SHouva's right...if you like color, ask around for color advice, look at the completed kitchens blogs (here or at the FKB), a little color is an inexpensive way to make a place sing! Great research on keeping it cheap! Your present kitchen's not at all bad, though tell me: how much space do you have between your countertops and wall cabinets? It looks like about 8 inches!
Now I see the photo. I agree, the space to the right of the stove looks too short. To the left it looks OK. Now I understand why the contractor will take then down for free. They are only 4 years old.
Please post more photos and your proposed floor plan so we can throw in our 2 cents worth of advise.
There we go! I think the pic was too big. There it is! My ugly kitchen.
Yes. Please please help me with colors. I'm not a decorator by any means. I'm not sure about the countertops yet. I just know I want LG and for it to be "grainy". You know, with large specks. I'm so ignorant about this. I heard about the site from an employee. I have no furniture yet because I have been living with a roommate since I moved here 2 years ago. I like the medium brown furniture from IKEA. Not the best furniture but it will due until I go up in grade at work. AND I want freize carpet. As my color sceam, I love green so I'm sure it will be beige, some chocolate and green (touches of apple green will make it exciting)for my whole house. I'll keep you all posted.
My condo: I'm buying an as is unit in a condo conversion. It was the handicap unit which is why the cabinets are low. Nobody has wanted it except for me, so it's priced 8,000 below other as is units and 15,000 below their half done "refurbished" units. And I'm pretty sure with some sweat equity I can do it better and less expensive than they did. It's the last north-south exposure as well and anybody that lives in Phoenix knows that important!
Yes Susan. I'm scared and excited. So many possibilities with it. I'm so glad to have found this sight.
