I'm so excited about this site - been lurking for a few days, and I'm really impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm here.
We're just in the 'thinking about it' stage of our potential kitchen reno, so I've been enjoying reading others experiences and getting enthusiastic. Maybe we really can do this and not spend a fortune!
My husband, almost 2-year old daughter, and I live a 20 minute drive from the Burlington IKEA, and while this has been great in terms of getting our first home furnished, it's been rather tough on the bank account. We also visit IKEA Etobicoke every couple of months, mostly because they have a much larger as-is section, and I loves me some bargains. In fact, I was there yesterday, and I got very excited about the new black-brown stain on the Hemnes dressers - not so fond of the yellow and red they are apparently intro'ing as well, but the black-brown is lovely and would look great in our bedroom. So new it's not even on IKEA Canada's website yet!
I'd like to post a kitchen plan in the next few weeks; while we probably won't be ready to start until the fall at the earliest, it would be nice to have a better idea of the costs involved. I will have to figure out where I put my tape measure...

Welcome dissonance! Glad you found us!
I think it's great that you're thinking of starting the planning stages well in advance. There are so many directions you can take with IKEA cabinets because they are so customizable and the more time you have the more ideas that you can throw around about what you really want to see in your kitchen!
As you already know, lots of people here are doing it themselves with IKEA- but the great part is how flexible you can be with this system by doing as much or as little as you want or feel comfortable with.
Cost is what drives a lot of people to look at IKEA, but I think they buy for the unexpected quality and style. That said, I was having a moment the other day over my budget (I wasn't over budget, just second-guessing myself and probably wanting my cake and to eat it, too). My wonderful sister helped me- she said "Since it's a given that you need to redo that kitchen, why don't you use standard appliances and the cabinets you're knocking off as your baseline and see that you're actually saving a ton of money."
That helped. The other thing is that there is so much satisfaction in being involved in the work for me. My appliances are in the garage, and it's all becoming very real! I'm very excited now.
We'd love to see what your plans are- however far off (or near!). Welcome to the land of the TKO!
Just thought I'd stop in and welcome you too! Ikea is so much more than what their catalog and displays seem! I would encourage you to think outside the box, come on over to the creative side of modifications and truly personalize your ikea experience!
Look forward to seeing your plans! (Kelly stole my thunder of my usual "Again, welcome, and happy TKO!")
and dissonance, i want you to know that i'm fully joking with kelly... and tko is a complete common term... i was the "welcome wagon" for awhile and that's all i meant by thunder.... (i think dulci is in a spunky mood this morning and should run off and grout the bathroom counters!)
Thanks for the welcome! I'm pretty sure there will be modifications aplenty in my kitchen - for example, there are some decidely odd plumbing issues that will need to be worked around, and with any luck some of you extra smart people can come up with a way to make my weird eat-in kitchen more functional. I haven't done much in the way of personalizing IKEA furniture, except for some nifty drawers I created for my Leksvik coffee table and putting different knobs on our Billy bookcase doors. Yes, we are wild and crazy people. We refuse to bow to the tyranny of standard knobs!
i did quite a few modifications in my mom's kitchen, which is in the "photo dump" linked in my signature, still haven't figured out how to organize photobucket albums....
