Hello from Seattle, WA

I guess after 50+ posts I could start an introduction thread

Currently "freshening" a 2 year old Nexus Birch (with a few numerar stainless panels) kitchen by replacing a fridge and hood, adding blumotion to all the drawers and doors, and soon to be added under-cabinet lighting.

I've posted a few pics of my kitchen/house but here are some more:

Here's a birds eye view of the kitchen. We are ceiling height challenged, so we mounted the wall cabs flush with the ceiling for maximum height. We chose light cabinets to try to not make the room seen caveish.

Here's the other side of the peninsula showing another stainless stack of drawers (sorry for the odd angle)

I also took the opportunity to add some of those nifty drawer dividers

Here's a shot of the business end of the kitchen, and probably our least favorite feature. The range and fridge are right next to each other. Retrospectively I should have split the tall pantries and placed the fridge between them, but that's a project for another day

We started this kitchen with a Bosch dishwasher, but recently replaced it with a Fisher & Paykel dish drawer. Wife wanted black because she was concerned about stainless finish on a dishwasher always being dirty looking.

Here's the sink. We went for a single bowl as we found we rarely used the double bowl. The sink is a Blanco Select undermount installed with reveal (for cleaning), and the faucet is a Bach BK100. We really LOVE the faucet...

We have a 49" blind corner unit that will soon be outfitted with a Lee Valley unit assuming I can find a kid small enough to install it for me

Boykster, what a great kitchen and a wonderful example of mixing the rubrik ss in!

And here are some shots of a few rooms of the rest of the house.

Living room (no Ikea in here I don't think)

Master Bedroom (notice the princess hogging the bed, and not on the doggie bed!). this room has a bit of Ikea -> the Pax glass door closet install (see modifications thread), as well as a light? Ignore the spackle patches on the wall, I need to finish patching after moving some things around.

Rec-room/Bar downstairs - this was our first foray into Ikea cabinets a couple of years ago. Again, nexus birch, but the uppers are Avsikt with the custom blue glass. My wife always wanted a "metal" wall for some reason, so we did one. The panels were ordered from Online Metal Store | Small Quantity Metal Orders | Metal Cutting, Sales & Shipping | Buy Steel, Aluminum, Copper, Brass, Stainless | Metal Product Guides at OnlineMetals.com and trimmed with 1" aluminum flat bars.

And for no particular reason other than its MY favorite room, the home theater:

The blue glow is a tray light soffit (and is really more white) lit with LED rope lighting for the entire perimeter of the room.

Thanks! We really have been pleased with the kitchen for the past 2 years, and I only stumbled on this forum trying to find more info about blumotion on Ikea cabinets. After reading this great forum/resource I would do several things about my kitchen differently (toe-kick drawers for one), but overall I'm still very satisfied. I'm also very pleased that the "new" features Ikea keeps coming out with for the most part can retrofit onto the older cabinets.

Cheers!

Rich

Rich,

Love your house! My husband would kill for that home theater room. Just so you know, toe kick drawers are an easy retrofit. I did mine after I had been in the kitchen for about a year or so. In fact, I like it so much, I just might add a few more in the next couple of weeks!

hi rich, i love your kitchen space i'm somewhat biased tho because i'm a big fan of the ss & birch combo. (we're planning on adel birch) we're diy'ers currently working on our kitchen (still in the demo/rebuilding walls phase, moving to electrical) and have also found this site to be so helpful.

i'm wondering how you like your electrolux fridge? i think we have the same one and have had it set up in the dining room for the past week (our old one defrosted daily so we couldn't use it as a temp). we stumbled upon a fabulous deal about a month ago and ended up buying almost everything by electrolux for the kitchen - cooktop, fridge, dishwasher, wall oven - hee hee. i noticed that you don't have it flush with the pantry next to it, nor the fridge cab above it - is that because of how deep the fridge is, or because it won't open properly if it's truly flush? would love to know as we've been trying to figure out if we should build out from behind our pantries (which will flank the fridge) so that they'll be flush with the fridge.

thanks! oh, and is your little princess a shiba inu? devon

Thanks! We really like the way the SS contrasted with the birch, and because of the layout we worked with, we had to do all birch doors on the wall cabinets. None of our sizes worked out so we could use the Avsikt doors, so we decided to break up the base areas with some stainless.

We've only had the Electrolux for a little more than a week, and so far we LOVE it. We had a Kenmore Elite side by side that wasn't counter depth, and while we gave up a bit of space in the fridge, having a smaller fridge really opens up the room. The space between the peninsula and the fridge is only 32" with this fridge, with the old one it was more like 28-29"...a bit tight, even now, but we'll deal with it.

Its not mounted "door flush" because the doors simply won't work properly if it is. I didn't have space to go fully flush, but I could go back a couple more inches, but some careful testing showed that the doors would definately bind. Keep that in mind as you plan your cabinet layouts.

And yes, that is our Shiba Inu - Rayna - sleeping in our bed

Oh, and for reference, here is the old kenmore fridge. We bought it before the kitchen renovation, and it worked fine with our old kitchen. We nicknamed it "Darth Vader"
