Also - re: your returns. Are you on a Mac? If so, try using FireFox for this website - I was using Safari and had the same problem as you did until Susan directed me to FireFox. For some reason this website doesn't like Safari or some of the other internet browsers.
I should probably introduce myself as well. My name is Kim and my husband Grant and I live in the Twin Cities with our 18 month old daughter Trinity. I am an environmental attorney (in-house) and Granthas hisownindustrial sales firm that primarily reps infrared cameras and heating equipment. A few years ago we bought a custom 1957 custom mid-century styled house that looks more like California cost than Minnesota. It was a major fixer-upper. So far we have redone the roof, furnaces, ACs, exterior paint, and some plumbing andelectrical. The house is 3,600 sq feet but only two bedrooms. So when Trinity arrived, we lost our home office and guest room. So in May we started a major remodel to get four bedrooms and restore the house back to its mid-century look.About 1,800 sq feet is being remodeled.
IKEA is going to love us. Besides a whole new kitchen (in a new location), we will have IKEA in two offices (Applad blue cabinets for desks and pantries for bookshelves) anda Docent entertainment center. Thank you to everyone for getting us to this point with your advice and answers to questions.
My existing kitchen gets demo-ed on Monday. ETA of new kitchen is end of October. We are going to be living in the existing two bedrooms and a lower level four season porch throughout the construction. I will try to set up a page on the progress blog.
Hi all! Have been a lurker here for awhile and decided to become a member so that when the time comes I can ask my questions!
I'm originally from NY, a Queens girl, married an Aussie so I'm here. Six years now. I've had to get used to the metric system!!It aint easy. I walk around with a tape measure that has both metric and feet so I know what measurements are what. You'd be surprised just how much ya need it!
I've been to Ikea twice since May and the second time bought the Domsjo double sink even though I haven't finalized my plans. Found a salesgirl and asked if they had the sinks in, she checked, said, "One left." and I said I want it. I had a tentative plan with me so she suggested I have it put in their puter for when I come back. When she went to put in the sink she said, "It's gone." I had a mild heart attack and said , "WHAT??!!" While the girl was dealing with me another customer showed up and the salesguy put her order in before my gal.Assurances that more would be in in a few weeks wasn't going to appease me so I got all New Yorky, stood my ground, and got the sink. Was I bad?:?
When I finally am able to get the kitchen redone I'll be going for Lindigo. I want a blue and white kitchen. Though I was extremely tempted to change my mind the last time I was at Ikea b/c they were having a HUMUNGEOUS sale on kitchens. I can't remember all the ones on sale, there were four, but the prices were 30% and 50% off and Fagerland was a whopping 60% off. I almost caved from my Lindigo that I've been looking at for two years now. Figured I could always paint the doors white but after my friend (who I went with) saw the Lindigo set-up she said to stay with my plan. They're adding new styles and I really love the Adel medium brown but I'm sticking to my white and blue theme that I'll add red accentsto - bringing a bit of America to Oz.
I love this site and all of you are so very helpful.
Welcome cait from the land of Down Under!! My daughter's friend is leaving for Australia very soon for at least three years on a missions trip. He and his mom lived in Fiji while growing up, so I think he misses the missions life.
I've been in the same boat "back-and-forth" between the Adel White and Adel Med. Brown. So, I know what's it's like to be indecisive. But, sounds like you have your mind pretty much made. We're here to offer any help when we can. Metric system would be hard for me, too. But, my dh says that he's surprised we haven't changed over because it's much better. I'll just stick with my tape measure:?
Hey, you were there first, you have dibs on the domsjo, no? We Americans stand up for what we think is right;if you can't stand for something, why stand at all?
Hey, Cait . Don't worry about waffling on the doors...we did the same thing, but once we started really looking at the floor with the doors, it all fell into place. As for the sink, I'm with Laurie: you were there first and fair's fair.
Oz is on our list of places to visit, but it's a few years off. Nearly went with my hockey team on a tour 'n play deal a couple years back, but it fell through.
As for metric, we've got that here in Canada...I'm 'bilingual' now, but I still have problems with picturing how big something is if all I have is the metric...
ROFL Martine, that is my exact problem! Someone says, "it's about 15cm by 22cm" and I've got my 'huh??' face on! Show me with your hands how big that it, please! lol But mostlymeasurements are referred to in millimeters. Ya can barely even see a millimeter without ya glasses (it's less than 1/16th of an inch - I just checked haha) So things will be 900mm by 1200mm and ya think it's huge!
Laurie I don't really think it's easier but guess it's what you're used to. The first time I went to the butcher I started to say how much ground beef I wanted and stopped b/c I didn't know what a half pound was in grams! Good thing the butcher remembered pounds and he also corrected me saying they call ground beef mince! Sorry, I think that's a bit OT but I'm remembering my difficulties when I first moved here.
Thank you both for saying I was correct in standing my ground. I've wanted an apron sink forever and am so happy I have it even if it may be awhile before I can install it.
I wanted to mention that the last time I was at IkeaI checked the Blummotion on the drawers and they did NOT shut slowly at the end so I asked a salesperson about it. She said they did close slowly but when she checked they didn't. Then she said they were getting in the new version (?) in August so I'm waiting until then to make sure the drawer fittings work that way.
And prices here are much more than in the US. I've compared prices and we pay nearly twice as much for some things. The Domsjo double sink was (converted) US297. The base cabinet for the sink is about US225. But that's the price you pay for living Down Under!
Hello everyone! I've been browsing the forums for quite a while now and think they're great, very valuable advice and experience. I only wish I had found you a bit earlier, since my ulriksdal kitchen is almost finished now...
Anyway, I'm Aliki (29)and I live with myboyfriend Apostolis (31)in Athens, Greece. No kids, no pets, although I'm trying very hard to convince him that we should adopt a kitty... We bought a 1970s apartment last year, it's got some nice features like 3 meter high ceilings (sorry for the metric ) and a nice view, but also had a horrible layout typical of 1970s flats in Athens city centre with lots of little halls and hallways and even aso-called "service room" which was used by a live-in house maid!
We had to tear many walls down and to completely replace all electrical wiring and plumbing, as well as most floors. And -of course- we redid the kitchen from scratch! I'll try to setup a progress blog with some pictures.
3m high ceilings...let's see, that's...ummm.....9.84 feet according to Google...well, I'm jealous! Coincidentally, Greece is also on my 'places to go' list, but we have definite plans for that: my 50th will be spent sea kayaking in the vicinity of the island of Milos. It's not that far off, but I'm not saying exactly Meanwhile, I spend a lot of time drooling over photos.
And yes, do get that progress blog going...there can never be too many kitchen photos!
kayaking near Milos??? Are you sure? Wow, you must be really good at it (and very brave too)! The winds there can be very, very,VERY strong, especially in the summer... Hope you have a great time, though!
