Wow, this is so much fun! I'll take a turn now....
I'm Emmie, 37 years old and originally from New Jersey. I moved to Massachusetts to go to college (Go Boston College!) and stayed. My husband, DJ, and I have been married 10 years. We are currently owned by three cats: Daisy, Oliver and Toby (the twin terrors.)
I have my master's in counseling psychology. I supervise group homes for mentally ill adults in Cambridge. DJ is in banking, he supervises the checkbook while I come up with rehabilitative plans for the house . We bought our house in 1998, a little cottage/mini colonial/New England...thing. It was built in the 1920's, and is about 40 minutes northwest of Boston. It's tiny, but it's home and we love it.
I also suffer from house project ADD (maybe we should start our own support group?) I am the creative brains of the design team here at home, although it's hard for me to finish a project of my own. However, I am always willing to jump in and help somebody else out with theirs! I live in perpetual chaos, always losing track of one project or another. I got kicked into high gear by having our bathroom done over a year ago. Now I have moved onto the kitchen with barely disguised impatience. (I keep smiling, but my fingers are drumming on the desk while I try to figure out what we can afford to do when!) Ikea cabinets have made it possible for us to do a re-do in a year instead of in 15. I have grown to love this forum as a "hang out" as well as a place to gather info and advice.
I love to read, and since I commute to work every day by train I get to do it for hours! I also love to cook, and am an avid net surfer. I like to learn about new things all the time, and I am constantly looking stuff up. One of my favorite hobbies actually has turned into a volunteer project: after looking up some of my deceased father's WWII buddies, I help to organize their reunion every year, and help find vets and families from his unit to come and join us. We will be inFort Worthin early May, anyone know any Army Air Corps vets from Iwo Jima?
I'm dying for spring training to end so I can see my darling BoSox play. (I'm a reformed Yankees fan, and my Bronx raised mother is still uncertain if she can forgive this!) I'm also a huge Kevin Millar fan, so this year I will be watching the Orioles play. I have just started to get interested in Irish history, I am addicted to the Food Network and "Project Runway" on Bravo, and I am a professional collector of paint chips. (See above information regarding being unable to finish a project to explain this.)
I'm STILL trying to learn how to resize pictures in order to post them, but I will get the hang of it soon! Thanks to all of you for your advice and support, all the giggles, and sharing all of your stories!
Ok, I'll play again. I didn't touch on the fact that I'm constantly in design mode with no financing at the moment. I use my graph paper to plan out my kitchen and our master bath. My dh says that things always look great on paper, but it's a whole different story when you start the demo (i.e., knocking down walls, moving plumbing, new electric outlets!) But, I'm an optimist! I did the same thing at our previous house, we did a 3 month rehab in 2 weeks (liked to killed us!!!) and made more money that we thought we would.
Anna - your dog is too cute!!!!! My boxer is that kind of ugly-cute kinda dog, if you know what I mean.
All of your lives are so exciting compared to mine. I get up at 5 am, I go to work, I come home, I fix dinner, clean house, maybe run my son to choir/drama at church, ....... besides this, my constant design mode is all I have!! We have to dream, right? And if I ever figure out how to download the planner, watch out!!
(Rant) - Some day I'll have my IKEA kitchen, I will, I will, I will...........
Cute Bruno!!! Cute Merlin! Laurie, your life isn't more boring than any of ours...you just think it is! Good luck with the planner and good luck with the graph paper!
You're right. Actually, I'm quite content with my not-to-thrilling lifestyle. I'm pretty much a home-body. But, it's nice to see the similarities and differences that everyone has. That's what makes the world go round!!
Fun! My name is Dana. I am 34 years old and have 14 month old boy/girl twins named Archer & Phoebe. My husband,John, owns his own company which does corporate and exhibit design. I do web design, or did before kids, will do again at some point! We are building a timber frame home (FINALLY!) and it can be seen on our blog: http://timberbarn.blogspot.com/
We *think* we have settled on using Fagerland, but painting them a cream color with a dark wood countertop.
We live in Connecticut and have an almost 13 year old Siberian Husky named Eska who is now blind from diabetes but would still love to be pulling a sled, Laura! She just might bump into a few trees. We also have a 5 year old Manx cat named Kip.
Alright nap time is over and I am being called by the dynamic duo!
One last thing. We are using Ikea kitchens obviously on the one hand to save money but also b/c they are well rated by Consumer reports. And I have a very expensive stove I really want to get. An Aga Six-Four: http://www.aga-kitchen.com/models/six_four.cfm?index=2
Mollie in UK- is your dog a Scottish Border Terrier? I have always wanted one of those. And I lived in London for a year. Loved it!
Dana - hi there. No, Mollie is an Irish Terrier crossed with a whippet (also known as a lurcher). She is a rescue dog who was found in Ireland as a stray and about to be put down. However, my parents have just 'rescued' a border terrier cross and he's gorgeous! We're not sure what else he has in him! Pic below......
BTW, your dog sounds gorgeous and wow - building your own timber house! Amazing, you lucky things......
