Hi to all,
I’m so glad I found this site, while I was researching Ikea kitchens.
We are planning to do complete renovation of our pretty tired stacked back into 80’s kitchen.
Before we moved to California we used to live in Moscow, Russia, so our choice of IKEA kitchen came natural since we used to live in small apartments with tiny kitchen. Therefore clever storage solution and functionality was essential for us.
I am really enjoyed all of great photos of beautiful kitchens and learn a lot from reading through the forums.
I do have a couple of question I do want to ask:
1. People I hired to install my engineered wood floating 5/8 thick floor warned me that it’s not a good idea to install the cabinets over the floating floor and he advised to install them straight on the concrete, for stability I guess, and build the floor around. I am really like the look with the cabinet legs exposed. So is it going to be any problems with cabinets istalled over the floating floor?
You can find my sketch at IKEA Planner, user name "david-alla@comcast.net" password: "elvis6" please look at the file: "My Kitchen -5" the final design I will be going.
I wood appreciate your response and any critic of my design.
Hi elvis and welcome to IKEAFANS! I don't have answers to your questions - but wanted to say hello.
If you don't get a response re: installing the cabinets over a floating floor you might want to start a new thread with a title like "Can I install my kitchen cabinets on a floating floor?".
You might want to save your sketchup as a jpeg and post a few images here. I'm not sure how many of us here are using sketchup - most of us here seem to use the IKEA Kitchen planning software.

all flooring installers i have spoken to PREFER wall to wall installation of flooring. You really shouldn't have a problem.... and if you want exposed legs then you have to do wall to wall.
What I find amusing is that those who caution against putting flooring under cabinets have no problem putting flooring under fridges and such...
Thanks a lot for the warm welcome, and for the quick response.
That's a good argument, let see what my floor guy is going to say about it...
It does make perfect sense, since the weight of the cabinets and countertops should be evenly distributed over the several cabinet legs.
I am buying my floor direct from whole sale distributer, they recommended this guy as independent contractor, since I did ask them if they do installation as well
ok, *sometimes* an independent installer will want more cuts cause it's more time... or they just feed into the myth... what does the manufacturer say? i've been able to find faq's online for many flooring companies and that is often a question.
I think the issue with floating floors is that they need a little expansion/contraction room so they are not attached to fixed objects anywhere. With the cabinets on legs, you're not attaching anything through the floor, just putting heavy things on top of it. I would think it would be fine.
I tried to access your plan with your email and password but it gave an error. If you would like to have someone take a look at your plan, I would recommend posting a new thread in the Kitchen Planning forum. Try attaching the .fpf file to your post. That will make it a little easier for others to access it and preserves your email address from over-exposure.
