INDUCTION COOKTOP--is it deeper than a regular cooktop?

Am at the point in the building of our home where I need to seriously start looking at appliances. We are about to do the final layout of the Ikea kitchen and purchase the cabinets, etc.

I am very intrigued by induction cooking. Initially I wanted gas, but where I live, we are off the grid and the thought of giant tank in my yard just isn't appealing, so I am looking at induction.

The only range I can find (and the only one that is made w /o a giant price tag) is the new-ish Kenmore Elite, but after weighing things, I do believe I prefer to stay with a cooktop and a separate oven. However, I am limited on space and had initially planned to put the oven below the cooktop, however after speaking to a salesperson, I was told that this would not be possible, since the induction cooktop supposedly (I don't know if I believe the sales guy..since I have found that they are often less-than-informed...) is thicker and doesn't allow for clearance under it (or ENOUGH clearance).

Has anyone ever had a similar situation??? Were you able to put drawers under your induction cooktop? Any advice? Help! I meet w/ the builder early next week to do the final layout......

Re: INDUCTION COOKTOP--is it deeper than a regular cooktop?

Your best bet is to visit the manufacturer website and get the installation instructions for the cooktop you are interested in.

it says you need 4.5"clearance, so if it is 2" deep, you can have a shelf 7" under the counter?

also visit http://theinductionsite.com if you have not yet.

fyi the Elite 4280 is well rated in consumerreport.org

Let us know when you made your choice (I'm interested too but I'm not as far along in the decisions)
