Kitchen fan vs micro ?

Hi all,

just a curious question. In Sweden, we all have kitchens fans over our stove. But in the US, it looks from your pictures that most of you have a microwaveowen instead?

don´t you have any fan in your kitchen?

Those microwaves have venting fans built in. But they are not as good as a pure fan, so they are not ideal. Still, many people are happy with them. Not my style, personally.

Re: Kitchen fan vs micro ?

At the risk of coming between Kelly & Chuck (now, that was funny Chuck!)...I have a combo microwave/fan over my stove.

As stated, the fan part of it barely sucks anything up at all (it sucks, not in a good way), I'm also very nervous about removing hot items from the micro as it is at eye level & the top element part of my stove is glass, or ceramic, one of those flat things. (You can tell how much I cook...I have one of those smooth flat things!!!) I'm always worried that someone (read DH or my Mother who breaks everything she touches, love her dearly, but...) will drop something onto the stove out of the micro.

I'd never do it again. I thought it'd be great, but no, I don't like it. Oh, we also don't have children. No way it's doable with children wanting to nuke something, IMO .

Re: Kitchen fan vs micro ?

Well, I have a microwave fan, and it works a LOT better than my old apartment setup, which had NO fan (only windows).

Personally I very much like having the microwave at eye level right over the stove. I do cook quite a lot, and constantly use the microwave in tandem with the burners when making meals.

One thing is that our microwave fan -is- kinda noisy, and I dislike using it above speed 3 for very long. However, at all speeds you can see steam being pulled into the fan unit, and at high speed (5) it definitely is pulling the air.

'tis true, they don't work as well as a dedicated extractor fan, but for me the space savings is worth it.

Re: Kitchen fan vs micro ?

As you've seen, it's a question of style and personal tastes. But there are also some practical considerations. I don't want anyone dropping heavy dishes on my Bosch glass top range and that might be a serious consideration if your household includes handicapped or short'n'rapid people.

You can see my story over in the FESS UP section.
I'm pulling a lovely s/s hood and putting in a Bosch OTR -MW next weekend. The hood has very bright lights and a super quiet 400cfm fan. But I should have put in the OTR when I did the kitchen three years ago.

Some reviews of OTRs suggest the ventilation systems in the newer units are far better than just a few years ago. The Bosch is "rated at 300cfm."

We shall see.
