We recently bought a 30" Kenmore Elite gas range for our kitchen and are now looking at range hoods. We are leaning towards the Bosch Slim Silhouette hood, http://www.boschappliances.com/art/p...DKE9465EUC.jpg. We initially thought a 30" model made the most sense, but after finding a closeout on eBay of a 36" model, I began to wonder if this would work too. My wife is worried the 36" will look too big over the 30" range, but I think it might be fine. The price difference between the closeout 36" and a new 30" is around $500, which isn't shabby.

Am I being too cheap or would the 36" be ok?

I think its actually not that uncommon-- I've heard about people doing it purposely on the THS boards. They claim the couple of inchesoverhanghelp capture all smoke/food smells, which is especially nice when thekitchen is close or open to living areas.I say if you have the space, go for it.

It's definitely doable, and some say preferable, to have a larger hood over the range. Just be aware that your wall cabinets will have to begin a couple of inches out from the base cabs they are over, so if you're one of those people for whom symmetry is important, you might have to tinker a bit with your wall cab layout.

I think it's quite common. If you think about it, it's only 3" larger on each side. It will definitely help with efficiency. A hood can be a focal point in the room, especially when the wall cabs. on either side are not butting up against the hood (IMO).

I am also planning to put a 36" hood over a 30" stove. I'll have cathedral ceilings & don't want smoke gathering so high up there.
