Could any of you with induction cooktops please tell me what kind of noise is involved when the cooktop is working?? Mine buzzes a bit as it's heating up and then when the temp is lowered it makes a slight zapping sound like static electricity consistently, every couple of seconds.....
Unfortunately I've never used one... I think Lisa (tree type)had one? Not sure about anyone else... We have a lot of cephalon, copper & stainless pots/pans so it wouldn't work well for us .

Cyndi, I think the noise level varies a lot with the maker and possibly the model. You might try posting or searching on the Appliancer Forum at Garden Web. I have a DeDetriech on order, and I can hardly wait!
James, I didn't consider induction until the last minute because of the nice collection of cookware I've accumulated. But once we went in to look at an induction cooktop,

wouldn't consider anything else. They really are nice. I am in the process of asking all of my friends and relatives if they are interested in any of my Calphalon. At least I got most of it at about 70% off so it's not a huge $ loss.
Fortunately the All-Clad stainless pots will work fine on the induction cooktop, as will cast iron.
DH definition
DH usually means Dear Husband (or, pick your own adjective starting with D).
Mine buzzes, hums etc at various times with different pots and pans. They all seem to have their own little characteristic sounds. None of the sounds are loud, certainly quieter than the hiss of gas. I have the De Detriech 309X. Love it!
I have the same problem. When I bought my cooktop, I grabbed a set of IKEA's 360 pots and pans on the way out the door. After all, they said they were induction capable! And of course they were cheap. Though they worked, they also sounded like a cross between a bug zapper and a hornet's nest while cooking. It was pretty bad. Turns out that any "clad" pots and pans, or those with layers of metal over another base metal (i.e. cheap stuff) end up vibrating differentially and creating a considerable racket under the magnetic field of the cooktop. To test this I put one of my old cast iron skillets on the stove and it was almost completely silent. Basically, this means you need to go for a little higher end product when shopping for cookware for your induction. Unless that is, you're not bothered by that terribly annoying buzzing!
In addition to the buzzing/banging, sometimes they make a very high pitched sound, so high that usually only very young people having hearing that's acute enough to be able to hear it. I know several people whose kids can't stay in the room when it's on, but they themselves can't hear it at all.
