Nutid HDN G650 hood - possible to make it shorter?

Okay, I hope someone out there can help me with this. We have 8 ft ceilings, and I ave fallen in love with the Nutid HDN G650 extractor hood. Too bad for me, because according to the specs, the minimum height of the hood is 39 5/8 in. That means that above my 36 high base cabs, I'd only have 21" inches between my cook top and the bottom of this hood. Not good! I know I'm supposed to have at least 30" of space between the gas cook top and the hood (although I understand it doesn't have to be that precise), and 21" is just way too little space.

Has anyone ever shortened the top of this thing, or is that even possible? Otherwise I'll have to look at another model...

I'm not sure whether we have outdoor venting or recirculated air for our current (and way on it's way out) over-the-range microwave, so I don't know whether this will make a difference on whether the hood can be shortened or not.

Thanks!

Re: Nutid HDN G650 hood - possible to make it shorter?

Hi, I have had the Nutid funnel cover shortened and angled to go through roof tiles / like that at top. Could have been done neater but possible. My problem is the fan itself doesn't extract on any of three power settings. Check before installation if it actually does the job.

How did you have it shortened? Self done or metal shop?

Hi. Did you ever figure out what to do with the HDN G650? I think I'm about to do what you suggest tomorrow. We bought one at AS IS and have to make it work in out 8 ft ceiling home. I can't quite figure out how it was supposed to work. Only for homes with taller ceilings? Anyway the vent cover, the outer housing of the stem part is actually two parts that telescope. The lower part is pretty much the size of the main part. Only 30 inches or so. I don't see why I can't just use this part and leave the rest off. If there's a reason, I guess I'll see tomorrow.

Welcome to IKEAFANS, mcot.

You can absolutely use just one cover or the other - the 2 pieces are there for high ceilings.

Thanks, I've got it up, though I had to do a lot of creative thinking. I got this from AS IS and I had no mounting bracket or template. Plus--d'oh--there's a joist in the way. I worked around that however.

But... I plug it in and nothing happens. It beeps but then no fan, no light.
