Coming to IKEA in August 2010......Induction cooktop at an IKEA price. Got the scoop in a CKL meeting with
Orlando
Kitchen managers, co-workers and installation vendors. Do not have the details yet but will post ASID. Also....glass cooktops are going knob free! That's right, touch control.
Ooh, what are the chances that the dimensions are the same as the current Eldig glass cooktop? That's what we were planning on and I can't live without a cooktop until August...but I'd love touch control! And induction at an IKEA price? Oh man... I guess I'll plan on the Eldig and then wait and see what the sizes and prices look like and then do some wishing and hoping and dreaming at that point.
FWIW
, Summit has induction cooktops at very reasonable prices (online for ≤ $900 including a cookware set), but it's almost impossible to find out enough about them.
(I was helping a friend who was interested and we finally gave up on them--no reviews, no sales people who knew enough to answer questions, but if you're in an area where Summit is around at dealers, maybe worth checking out if you can't wait for Ikea.)
I heard that the Ikea induction cooktops for North
America
will be 71 cm in width. I'm hoping they eventually bring the 59 cm. size over too, although the small euro-style doesn't seem to sell as well.

Yeah, and one of the very few reviews I was able to find (at ajmadison.com) on one of their built-in units talks about it not being hard wired and that it is recommended to unplug it after use. So I'm not all on board with the Summit brand.
There are a couple of 30" that are in the $1400 range by GE, Kenmore, and Electrolux...but I'm still trying to decide if the extra grand is worth it. The configuration we're going with has the cooktop on a peninsula where we will have eating space on the other side, and I have a 6 year old
DS
...so the cool surface really calls to me.
DS definition
DS can mean Dear Son, Dear Spouse or Dear Sister. You may need to ask for clarification, or read between the lines.
Well, definitely the full sized ones are hard wired. You can see that much in the spec sheet. The info that's not available is about things like power boost, how much power per hob if all hobs are on simultaneously, heat shield clearance, etc.
Summit is generally pretty good (usually rebadged European brands), but when I tried to call to find out about whether it's possible to install one over a wall oven in base cabinet, I got a sales person who'd never heard of doing such a thing with any kind of cooktop.
FWIW
, all induction units are made by the same couple of companies, regardless of the name on them. Even the snooty induction site, which spurns all the lower end brands in the US (no info about summit, kenyon, etc), admits that.
Thanks Harpy, good info. There's an Electrolux hybrid one at a nearby Sears Outlet, which seems like a nice way to test the waters on induction...but this puppy is 36" and seems like a big commitment hole-in-the-countertop wise.
We've been waiting a long time for some of these appliances to make their way over here. Now we just need the dishwasher drawers.
I threw up a quick front page post about this thread to let others know while we all wait for more info to break. Le Creuset has gotta be just LOVING the trend toward more affordable induction cooktops!
