Mumsig double oven info missing

The Ikea website states that a Mumsig double oven (and the single also) can display temperatures in Fahrenheit or Celsius degrees.

We bought and installed the Mumsig double oven. It shows temperatures in Fahrenheit by default. The user manual has no information on how to switch it to Celsius.

I called Ikea and was told that they do not know, they do not have one functioning on the floor and I am to call Whirlpool.

I did. They simply do not recognise the Ikea model number, they had no idea and told me to call Ikea. They also suggested that I can switch the oven to Celsius by holding down the "Custom Broil" button. Guess what? There is no "Custom Broil" button on the Mumsig oven.

I called Ikea again. Someone will call me back. They did not.

Last week I visited the store and talked to someone intelligent in the kitchen department. He said he will refer it to a manager. Sure enough, I got a voice mail message from someone at Whirlpool. The message says: You can switch the oven to Celsius by holding down the "Custom Broil" button.

I went back to the Ikea store and talked to the same fellow. He promised to look into it and call me. He did. He was given the following instructions to relay to me:

Turn the selector knob to "Light"
Hold the Enter button till F appears in the display
Move the Set button to change F to C

Great! I tried. I turned the selector knob to "Light" and held the Enter button until I turned blue. No F appeared in the display. Same result (or rather lack of) on both sides of the display.

I am really frustrated. Is there a way to get to someone who knows?

=================================================

Ikea sent out a troubleshooter yesterday. He came armed with the same instructions I was given (Turn the selector knob to "Light", Hold the Enter button till F appears in the display, Move the Set button to change F to C).

He got the same results I did, declared that 'there is obviously a problem' and he will refer it to his manager. Someone supposed to get back to me.

==================================================

I got a call that we obviously have a defective oven and it will be exchanged.

==================================================

A new oven arrived today. We uninstalled the "defective" one, put the new one in its place, connected it and guess what? It works EXACTLY the same as the previous one. Can not set it to Celsius.

I am calling the kitchen department again on Monday.

==================================================

Whirlpool arranged to send out a technician. He figured out that the model number ending with 00 does not have the F to C switching capability, the same model number ending with 02 does. He would order the controller for the 02 model and install it in our 00 model, practically converting it to a 02 model.

Months and a half later, technician came with the new part and installed it. Same result, can not set it to Celsius.

More calls to Ikea, got it escalated to store manager. He was very willing, but had a lot of difficulties getting the right person at Whirlpool.

I had a call from someone at Whirlpool. Same story, set knob to light position, hold.... I called back to the Ikea store manager. Next day voice mail message from Whirlpool: "We are looking into it, will figure out what to do and let you know".

Four weeks later, another message from Whirlpool: "We are ordering another oven for you from the USA, will let you know when it is in".

5 weeks later, call from Whirlpool: We have the oven for you, we are going to come and replace the one you have. And sure enough, on June 6th a crew of 4 arrived, they took the old 00 model out, installed a brand new 02 model oven and it WORKS!!!!!

Hallelujah! It only took 8 month.

Re: Mumsig double oven info missing

Other than your issues with the temperature readings ... are you happy with the product?

Thanks.

Re: Mumsig double oven info missing

Not at all.

The 02 model could change C to F degrees OK, but the clock was losing time, approximately a minute a day. After numerous (unsuccessful) repair attempts, Whirlpool Canada offered us the choice of refunding our money or get a replacement of a different brand (one of their many) that fits into the same opening. We have chosen to get it replaced with a KitchenAid Architect II KEBS208SSS and Whirlpool supplied it at no charge to us, they even sent a technician to uninstall the Mumsig and install the new unit.

The KitchenAid has been functioning flawlessly ever since it was installed (October 2007).

The biggest problem with the Mumsig (and probably some of the other units by Whirlpool) is that they are made in Italy, parts like the control processor originate in Germany and Whirlpool does not have parts in North America. So every time they need a part, it goes the Germany => Italy => USA => Canada route which takes months and months. Totally unacceptable.

May I also say that the 'After Sale Service Manager' at the Ikea store (North York) was bending over backwards to help, but had great difficulty making contact with the right person at Whirlpool.
