Has anyone used a slide-out range hood? I'm looking at the KitchenAid 30" model #KWVU205SS. I think it will look better under a wall of the 30" horizontal wall cabinets -- I'm just not into hoods as a design accessory. My only concern is that I don't know anyone with a slide-out range hood, and I've googled slide-out vs. undercabinet and come up with nada.
We don't cook much -- two burners at a time is a max so far. I know I need a range hood because my original-to-the-house 1950's hood just makes noise and blows the smoke back into the kitchen. I'm not looking for the 800cfm industrial hoods, just something to take the aromas and the smoke out of the kitchen.
something about the IKEA slide-out that I didn't realize until I saw one in As-Is yesterday is that all the mechanicals have to go into an over-the-range cabinet - that's how they can make the visible part so low-profile.
It looks like it would pretty much take up all of a 30x15 wall cabinet.
I think the slideout just prevents the grease from flying up into the air and sticking to your cabinets, walls, lights, etc.
The big difference in hood performance has to do with the ducting. Venting it to the outside with properly sized ducting will give you the best performance.
And, as always, don't get sucked in...be CFM-wise!
First, I apologise for the title of this reply. Second, As discussed here before, be careful about how big your fans is CFM-wise- if you get above 700 CFM you may need to add a totally new air-intake system to eliminate the concern of backdrafting, where you end up sucking fumes out of your furnace...which are of course carbon monoxide....
Kelly, that's sick. I had no idea that could happen.
I'm looking in the 300-400 CFM range, for a 30" gas burner range. I read an article that advised looking for sones less than 5, to keep down the noise, and I was a little disappointed that the IKEA slide-out hood is rated at 6.9 sones. The Kitchenaid I'm thinking about is quieter but pricier.
It's called backdraft, and it has recently become an issue due to the tighter construction of new homes and the mega-CFM hoods that are popular.
You could put in a makeup air system if needed, or you could simply open a window when you needed to. Or if you have an older slightly leaky house, you won't need to do anything.
