Could someone explain "Cabinet Depth" refrigerators?
I was in Home Depot looking at fridges...... one for my NYC apt and also for our country home we're renovating.
In my apt, i have this big white thing that sticks out way past my cabinets and is too big since my kitchen is just part of my entrance hallway.
I asked to see "cabinet depth" and they were all thes giant, very wide (36") things, and the man kept saying that cabinet depth is actually DEEPER than 24" which seemed weird to me.
The only on they had that looked perfect for my apt was this LG which is nice and narrow (24") but the guy kept saying it's LESS than Cabinet depth as if that was a problem! I didn't get that. and i finally found it on the LG website and they call it cabinet depth.
Re: Could someone explain "Cabinet Depth" refrigerators?
Cabinet depth is a term for a shallower fridge. Typically, they are just over 24" deep as the doors need to protrude to be able to open, while "regular" ones can be as much as 30" deep. Since there's lesser space now, they may compensate by making them wider and/or taller.
Since they consider this more a luxury feature (even though it takes less material), you will have to shell out the $$$.
Re: Could someone explain "Cabinet Depth" refrigerators?
That's all true- you do pay more, and there aren't as many of them. Another option might be to build the cabinets out a bit from the wall to give them built-in look. Really depends upon your space if that would work- guess maybe in country house, and no in city apt?
I'm not sure what would be "less than cabinet depth" but you hear some strange things from salespeople. Probably it is a bit shallower that some cabient depth fridges, but may require more space between the back of the machine and the wall, so it will be flush or slightly in front of the cabinets.

BTW
, we had that LG in our old place (townhouse, but tiny, tiny kitchen) and were quite happy with it for the 3 years we had it before selling the place. It was not in a cabinet run though (it was placed in a tiny corner between a doorway and a door).

Good to know! Thanks.
If I ever do actually redo my apt kitchen (now I"m waiting to see wht comes out in august...not to mention figure out the $$!) I'm pretty sure I will get that LG model. It's narrow and titanium and not a fortune.
Re: Could someone explain "Cabinet Depth" refrigerators?
It should be criminal to construct a kitchen which limits the size of a refrigerator to something that's very hard to find. I could actually tear out a small pantry in my condo to make room for a larger frig, but that would look silly in a small kitchen! I've found "Avanti" appliances, they make compact fridges and "apartment size" which are counter depth (maybe a bit smaller) and very narrow. The largest CU size is 11.1 I believe. Everything is shown on their web site (avanti.com), but only a few companies sell and ship them (by freight). They run about $400 give or take, plus freight (for me that's about $130). I think they are nicer looking than the LG. Good luck!

Also, the LG is a lot smaller (internal space) than most fridges on the market in the
United States
. While this might work well in a city environment, the addition of an ice maker would steal a lot of the remaining space.
I spent a year in a nice camper/trailer (water, sewer hooked up, but still could drive it away with my landlords truck if necessary). It had this great built-in fridge that was shallow and narrow but still seemed to have a lot of space. It was raised up about 2 feet, with a storage cabinet underneath. So nice and efficient! Nothing like that on the market, though, as far as I can tell.
