Help! I can't decide which kitchen cabinet to get!
Hi! I'm new to this site and I'm so happy I found it. I've spent hours looking at before and after pictures and reading the forums.
My problem is I can't decide between the white lindingo cabinet and the adel medium brown. This is for our "summer" home, it's a galley layout and I thought white would be perfect because it would give me that relaxed country feel when I stay there. I thought I was set on it, until I saw the adel medium brown in the Ikea showroom. It looks so rich and warm. We have something similar to adel medium brown color in our primary home so I was leaning towards the white.
Does anyone know how popular white kitchens are and if they have any effect on the re-sale value of a home?
Re: Help! I can't decide which kitchen cabinet to get!
I would do the white, without a doubt. I know the Adel MB is really popular, but you said you already have something similar in your primary house. I would be inclined to do something different in my vacation home.
Regarding whether white will impact resale -- I think so, but only positively. It is timeless, and looks fresh and clean. It happens that right now, white is very trendy as well (in part due to that film, Something's Gotta Give -- just look at the number of knockoff kitchens that has spawned and that are gracing all the design magazines).
Of the white IKEA cabs, I think I like Adel white the best, but I prefer the ones people have done by painting one of the wood styles they offer white, because the finish on the Adel white is a little fake looking, imo.

It depends on the effect you are after. We wanted a traditional look. We are installing Lindingo in a north facing kitchen. It looks beautiful. To me the Lindingo looks like a high gloss finish and it is aleady done without the additional expense of painting a wood door white.

Note that I was referring to the Adel door finish; I am not as familiar with Lidingo and it may very well be that the style of the doors itself (with the beadboard look) makes a big difference. As I said, the choice of Lidingo over Adel MB, given the OP's description of her considerations, is a no-brainer.
Regarding painting, if you can paint the doors itself, it might cost an additional $100, max., and given the cost of the entire kitchen I think that additional cost is fairly irrelevant. It is, however, somewhat of a PITA to paint the doors, and requires some amount of patience to do it right. Some posters here have done some gorgeous painted kitchens, in white and pale grey, that I can recall off the top of my head.
Re: Help! I can't decide which kitchen cabinet to get!
Yankee Lawyer hit it right on the head- the Lidingo with soapstone or other dark counters, white subway tile, big apron front farm sink with shiny chrome mixers (preferably a wall mounted mixer) and a judicious mix of stainless pro-style equipment/integrated panel appliances and dark wood floors is the #1 requested kitchen in the US.
So, let's talk about resale value. I just did a kitchen that does not in any way resemble that description. However, if I was in the market for a house, and that kitchen (done well) was available to me, it would be a massive plus. I would love it.
I would absolutely go with the Lidingo in the cottage.

Did I mention how much I struggled with the decision to go with euro sleek ove the white cabinets look? Or that now that I currently have no kitchen (i.e., we demolished it and I am looking at an empty room), I am starting to waver again ?
BTW, if you happen to go with white and are not 100% excited about the IKEA doors, Scherr's does super solid wood doors in any species and has a nice shaker style door in particular. They have all the IKEA specs on file and know what sizes would be needed / will drill the appropriate hinge holes in advance. I got some sample doors from them in quartersawn oak, maple, and walnut (the walnut was a slab, the other were shaker) and they were impressive and very reasonably priced. I used the maple and oak ones to test paint and they came out beautifully with minmal effort (i.e., I used ordinary semi-gloss latex that I had on hand and an okay quality brush). Anyway, had I chosen that route I probably would have gotten the Scherr's custom doors in the shaker style and painted them (and I am still tempted to do so).
And Kelly, if you were selling your house, for me your kitchen would seal the deal. I love, love your kitchen!
Re: Help! I can't decide which kitchen cabinet to get!
Oh! Thank you so much! I just read this to McGuyver who worked so hard on it. I love it. I did some math the other day on what this would have cost with the originally planned cabinets...let's just leave it at 50% more. And THAT is great for resale value!
Re: Help! I can't decide which kitchen cabinet to get!
thanks to everyone for your advice. I've decided to go with the white. Now I just have to decide between the adele white and the lindingo white. Does anyone know if one is better quality than the other?
Re: Help! I can't decide which kitchen cabinet to get!
personally (and i've been beaten up about this, so let's not jump on Dulci folks!) i MUCH prefer the Lidi to the AdelW. for whatever reason TO ME the Adel just looks a bit plastic-y whereas the Lidi looks like the timeless door some have mentioned above.
i'm fully aware that folks who have gone with AdelW LOVE that door, but to me the Lidi just "feels" nicer
my 2c
