A local sink and bath outlet amazed me yesterday with its assortment of scratch & dent Blanco and Franke sinks.
I was amazed by a Blanco mega-sink, actually a 47 inch stretch of countertop. Starting from the right, there's a fairly large main sink with overflow, then a small sink that catches anything flowing in from a vast sloped drainboard/work surface. The whole thing sits on a sort of podium 2" high. The entire unit is 47" long and 24.5 " deep.
The sink portion should fit over a regular 30" by 24" deep sink bottom unit, perhaps with a bit of carpentry to assure that the front is properly supported. Then the drainboard would extend over the dishwasher.
The sink comes with a chopping board that fits neatly and securely over the drainboard, a metal perforated sink cover and a plastic cover whose purpose I haven't figured out. Drain plumbing is included, too.
I didn't spot the sink's name at the shop, but I'm pretty certain it's Blanco SUPRA M-60 Single Bowl Sink
Upside:: 47 inches of counter wouldn't need countertop. If granite is $50 installed, that's a savings of about $195. Not to mention that there's no worry about the sink cutout being done right.
The drainboard area would contain spills effectively and would be perfect for processing salad, veggies, whole fish, whatever. A veritable science lab!
Downside:
Two big dents in the front. The body shop at my Ford dealer just might help hammer it out, or various other handy types. Nevertheless, it won't look perfect.
Just how to get it and the countertop to fit over the dishwasher? (I suspect this is figureable-out).
It's huge and unusual. My house fits a conservative mid-income, possibly retired demographic (albeit a great young couple just moved in to the rear). If I ever sell the house, the Mega Sink would violate the rule that nothing should draw too much attention to itself.
It would gobble up counter space that might be used for mixers, popcorn machines, and all the other gadgets and activities.
Some think stainless is ugly.
Big upside: $650. The sink would partly pay for itself through the countertop that's not needed.
I would consider it if you can confirm you can install over cab and dishwasher rather than requiring giant single cab. Does the store have the instructions?
I should have mentioned that the sink's edges are reinforced with wood, which should make it very simple to screw the sink unit to the underlying cabinets. The dishwasher area will obviously need some reinforcement to ensure stability of the sink and countertop.
A less desirable alternative would be to place a 15" cabinet between the sink cabinet and the dishwasher.
Harpy, I found this post in the Recent Posts that you click on the blue bar at the top...is that the list you're thinking of, or are you talking about the list on the homepage?
