Our quartz countertop is supposed to be installed in a week, and we ordered a 17 inch overhang on the back side of our base cabinets, to create a breakfast bar. The installer said that in order to warranty it, we have to either attach brackets/braces in 3 places to the back of the cabinets, or have leg supports installed and ready to go.
SO... has anyone done this, and what did you use? Is it difficult screwing support brackets into the particle board (it's an Adel Medium Brown kitchen)? And if you used legs instead, did you use Ikea table legs (which we are considering)? How did you install them without the countertop in place, or do we wait until it arrives to install the legs, if that's what we end up going with?
There are lots of people here who have installed supports- if you go with brackets, know that your choices are many and you don't have to get the first ones you see. Mockett, Hafele, etc all have interesting ones.
You would screw the supports through the AMB back cover panel of the island, no issues with that holding.
Re: legs- I don't see how you do this before the countertop is on. In fact, I don't see how you do either version before the countertop is on. They should use cut 2 x 4's to support the overhang temporarily while the brackets and legs- ready to go- are installed.
A 17" overhang is quite large...at counter height a max of 15" is adequate, and as small as 10" is workable. So perhaps changing the size of the overhang will help you avoid the whole issue?
Is he doing an underlayment under the quartz? If so, he could rout out channels in the underlayment for flat steel bars, to give more support to the surface. That's a fairly common thing to do with granite, and it might be the same for quartz...worth asking.
But as long as you don't have cabinets under the overhang with doors on them, you should be able to use brackets on the back side where you would be installing cover panel.
thanks so much! we found a good steel bracket by hafele that we are going to order. i'll let you know how it goes!
I'm running into the same problem with our granite and 15 inch overhang. What did you find as the hafele site can only be termed wretched?
The only mounting bracket I've found so far is something called Rakks. Sadly it looks very industrial and we would have to spend quite a bit of time prettying it up.
Not to be annoying, but I will make the plug that you would need no support if you could live without the extra 3" of overhang. Now, we can move on.
The Hafele site allows you to download PDFs of the entire catalog, and I agree that you really have to know what it is that you are looking for. It's not intended for retail, it's a resource for designers.
There are other sites which sell Hafele which make it much easier to review their offering. Try a google search, or, go to a kitchen/bath hardware specialist and ask to see their hafele catalog.

Actually, that's not an option or applicable to what we're doing. The area we're having problems with is 4 feet by 15 inches. It's going to be wall-mounted so something must keep the granite aloft (it's adjacent to another hanging counter but that counter has cabinets).
The fabricator is telling us we must have 2x4s along the wall and corner and he wants us to add a post at the one free corner. That's not an option my wife likes (personally, I'd like to scrap the entire area).
Looks like Shortrunpro and Rakks make something we can use - l brackets that are 12 inches long. Still can't find anything from Hafele that fits my wife's request (no corbels).
SO... we had the counter installed last friday, and we just ended up going with 3 steel brackets my husband found at dixieline lumber here in san diego. they are triangle shaped, black, really simple and have a 15 inch top piece and a 10 inch side piece. my husband screwed them through the back cover piece of our cabinets into the particle board sides with no problems. the installers did end up trimming about an inch off the top pieces, and we also had to screw a piece of 2x4 into the wall where it meets the wall, but that's it. it looks awesome, the brackets are not too obtrusive when you cross your legs underneath it, and so far, so good. i'll try to post pictures when i take some. thanks again everyone for your input!
