In my plan I have an upper cabinet that I will use as shelving, leaving off the doors. I plan to put a mini-microwave on the lower shelf and a wine rack on the upper. Has anyone done similar? I don't want the micro over the stove and I don't want it on the counter. It seems that the wall cabinet would make great shelving without the doors.
Does this sound like it will work/look good? Thanks for your thoughts.
We have an open wall cab as base which is used for cookbooks and a 12" regular base currently open--very useful but messy so we're not sure we'll leave it that way. We are perfectly happy with the color and function, however. The Stat and cab color are close enough that we have no problem with the mix of open and closed.
I'd be more concerned about the microwave because the wall cab is awfully shallow. Make sure you have enough clearance for ventilation and that the unit sits steadily fully on it.
I did just exactly that...changed out my door on the 24Wx39H wall cab for a 24x24 door and left the bottom shelf open for a microwave. It has to be a tiny microwave, though, because the shelf is very shallow for microwaves. I have the freebie white Galanz micro that I got from IKEA when I ordered the kitchen, and it fits fine with about 1" extending beyond the frame of the cabinet. Anything larger, though, won't work...I know, because I purchased a new microwave (wanted stainless) after measuring it in the store, and it didn't fit! Just about half an inch too deep, but the leg wasn't on the shelf. My option is to cut down a cover panel as an extended shelf, but I didn't like having the side of the microwave exposed so much anyway...so the new micro is going back and I'll use the small Galanz. We are not big microwave users, mostly defrosting and warming up leftovers, so it's fine for us. If you're a power micro user though, it wouldn't be nearly big enough. I will eventually trim it out a bit more, but for now it works fine.
Thanks for your input, ladies. I'm going to go for it. GE makes a mini micro in white that is 12.5 " deep and 17" wide. We only use it for heating coffee and the occasional defrost.
I don't know if I'm missing something, but why don't you just use an actual microwave cabinet? Then you could leave the door off the top half of it. According to the Kitchen Planner Ikea do several microwaves to fit their microwave cabinets, presumably they are shallow enough but they are also wider than normal so the fit snugly and you don't go those gaps at the side of the microwave.
(I haven't actually got one of these cabinets myself, but I am planning on getting one)
I also could be missing something. From what I can see, the IKEA microwave cabinets have that shelf that sticks out, which I don't care for and don't really need. The unit I have is only 12" deep and will fit just fine in the cabinet without the shelf extension.
Wow, I just checked and the American microwave cabinet does indeed look like it has a shelf bit sticking out, but the one on the Belfast site doesn't.
America........................Belfast
Just checked, and it's (obviously!) because the American microwaves are bigger - 39.4cm deep instead of 32cm deep (sorry, you'll have to work out the inches for yourself!)

Reason: Checked size of microwaves themselves
