I have an Elkay triple-bowl sink (already purchased) which I desperately want to use in an IKEA kitchen I'm planning. Problem is, the dimensions for this sink require a minimum 37" opening (that's the combined width of the actual bowls themselves). I take this to mean that the 36" IKEA sink cabinet (which I suppose only has an interior dimension of around 34+ inches due to the width of the side panels) is not large enough, and IKEA doesn't seem to have a larger sink cabinet.

Any ideas on how I can make this work?

I'm not sure what type of counters you were planning, but I also purchased an undermount sink too big for my sink cabinet. As a solution, the granite guy suggested that they could cut down the sides of the cabinet. I was too afraid to go that route and bought a different sink, but that might work for you. Good luck!

You can carve out a U shaped chunk from the side, and for more room back-to-front you can turn the crossbars sideways or carve out a bit of them if needed. Carving out from the side won't damage the integrity of the cabinet as long as you leave the back and front connector locations alone.

After browsing the catalog further, I'm going to try two 24" sink cabinets side-by-side, and then I'll have to chop out a section of the sides of both cabinets where they meet in the middle to clear the middle sink bowl and part of the plumbing line. I'll probably need to do some wood surgery, but this seems like the best solution, given the space I have to work with. That's the only way I can think of to keep the sink centered over the resulting cabinets, and under the 48" window above where it will be mounted. Hope it works -- I'm buying them tomorrow!

I think your better play would be to follow Eva's advice and carve down the sides of the 36" cabinet. It may require some design creativity, but it will make the plumber's work MUCH easier.
