We're about to install a numerar beech butcher block counter in our kitchen. I have a few questions about the order we should do things. We're going to seal it with tung oil. Do I need to seal both the top and bottom of the countertop before installing? What about when we cut a sink hole? Originally, I had thought we'd only need to oil it after we had it all set on the counter, but now after some research, I'm realizing how much more work is involved. I'd appreciate it if someone would lay out the steps to installing a butcher block countertop, including when to seal certain parts (do you need to seal the ends?). Thanks!
I sealed the top and all end cuts, including sink. I did not seal the underside. Be sure to put a moisture barrior around your dishwasher. (I just used a heavy black "leaf" bag cut to size.)
We sealed our sink board like crazy everywhere multiple times with Waterlox. The rest of the boards all have at least 3 coats of Behandla everywhere and more added on top over time. I wouldn't do it any other way--and I wish I could somehow get to the undersides again now. Too afraid of the wood warping.
