Magnesium Halogen lighting system problems

I'm not sure where else this would go.

I am having a real hard time getting these to work. I've redone the electrical in several rooms in my house and never had problems like this. I thought there was a thread about this but can't find it when searching.

Are the magnesium AC-DC transformers really bad? I have three that I can't get to work, on two separate circuits. One of them appears to be an older model without a ground. The newer one worked for a while but then it shuts off. I can't tell if its getting too hot, but I have a voltmeter and there is no voltage coming out of any of them when they are hooked up. I thought I had one set up and finalized in the ceiling and all the lights worked, but after 15 minutes of being on it just shut off.

I've never blown a breaker. In fact, there are only two magnesium light sets on this one breaker.

It makes no sense other than the magnesium transformers are pure crap.

Anyone else had this problem? Will Ikea let me return the transformer boxes only or will I have to take down all the light now too?

thanks for any help.

Re: Magnesium Halogen lighting system problems

My Magnesium just died as well. The other thread made it sound like a problem with the track, but I would think you could see that.

I suspect the transformer has died. Time to get a new light I think.

Re: Magnesium Halogen lighting system problems

I had a similar experience recently that may be related, and cannot figure it out. I bought the transformer/rail only, thinking that the lights were in the same box like 3 years ago. Only later I noticed you have to buy the lights separately. So I installed the transformer and attached one light stolen from another track. The light was extremely dim and voltage out of the transformer was about 2 VAC instead of 12 V.

I also suspected that the transformer is bad, but I still got 5 new lights and attached them all, and suddenly everything was fine. How can the output of the transformer depend on how many lights are connected?

I'm puzzled, but the Magnesium light is functioning...
