I have a LOT of kitchen knives.

I didn't want them in a drawer (or two) as that is dangerous, bad for the knives.
If I don't SEE the kitchen tool, I forget I have it (duh).

SO I wanted to put some/most of my knives up on a magnetic knife rack where I could see them and get to them quick and easy.

I didn't want to use a horizontal knife rack on the backsplash, under the wall cabinets.
Knowing me, I'd have all sorts of storage jars & gizmos (blender, coffee grinder, food processor) in the way.

I put in a wall of tall (floor to ceiling) wall cabinets, so I had the roughly 1' deep by 7' tall sides to figure what do to with.

SOLUTION:
I used 6 IKEA GRUNDTAL magnetic knife racks (3 on each end) mounted VERTICALLY.
SO, most of my knives (the ones I use a lot & the ones I want to show off) are out in the open.

I think the IKEA GRUNDTAL magnetic knife racks were $6.95 each - a lot cheaper than any alternative I'd found. The magnets inside are VERY strong. I liked that they just show a STAINLESS band to the eye, not showing wood or plastic parts as did the alternative magnetic knife racks I found.

AND (unexpected benefit) my chrome/steel trash can sticks to the bottom of one of the knife racks and stays in place!

One GRUNDTAL knife rack is sufficient for me (holy mackeral, you must have a lot of knives if you needed SIX...I am digging that horse knife on the top!), but I can concur that they are indeed very grabby and very attractive. And the price?! That's just the icing on the cake...I'd have bought it if it cost 4 times that (which is how I feel about a lot of stuff from IKEA, but I digress).

When I was moving last year, I was taking down my knife rack and accidentally dropped it behind the stove. It got REALLY STUCK to the inside back of the stove...it was pretty incredible how firmly it was attached. I had to perform contortions and pry it off with a flathead screwdriver.

GREAT post, RichardinKRV!! Welcome to the forums! (Where's KRV?)

I picked up a couple of these in the AS-IS room for .50 a piece. Yippee! Nothing makes me happier than a bargain, unless its a bargain that I was going to pay full price for anyway!

Looks like you've got some great things going on there! I, too, am curious about your horsie knife. What gives?

Susan

I bought a knife bar with the intent of doing exactly that...hanging it vertically on the side of the upper cabinet next to my sink. However, since the kitchen is now visible from the living room, it just looked too...well, violent for me. Since my DH is a pastor, I thought it might not send quite the right message, KWIM? It's bad enough he's a horror movie fan (the old B&Ws mostly), a knife display like that would send some people right over the edge LOL

SUSAN,
The HORSIE KNIFE I got JUST to have people ask about it.

Sometimes (after 3 margaritas) I say it is for horsemeat.

I won it off eBay, where it was described by the eBay seller "dagizmoguy1":
-----------------------------------
Vintage Old Carbon Figural Horse Chef Butcher Knife
Ebay Item number: 6146607406
This terrifically singular vintage figural chef's or butcher's knife measures about 12 1/4" long and weighs just under one full pound. It has jet black handle slabs that I think may be micarta and they're tightly triple riveted to the full tang of the blade with brass and copper birds eye style pins. This is an actual working knife, the entire blade appears to be highly polished carbon steel, the blade edge is about 8 1/2" long and it's VERY sharp. There's a little gouge at the end of the obverse side handle slab (3rd photo) and a hairline crack on the reverse side handle slab at the front pin (7th photo). Neither of these is likely to ever get any more severe than they are right now and other than those this highly unusual vintage knife looks in absolutely excellent condition to me. It's so tight it's as if it were all made from a single solid steel bar and the blade is absolutely rigid with zero flex.
-----------------------------------
Truth is - I've never used to cut anything, but I have to break apart some frozen things.
But it sure looks neat! And that's good enough!

SUSAN,
I neglected to answer your other question: (Where's KRV?)

KRV = Kern River Valley, which is a idyllic valley at the southern end of California's Sierra Nevada mountains. About 50 miles from Bakersfield CA (the nearest "big box store city"), 180 miles N of LA, but on the way to nowhere, off the beaten track.

There are about a half dozen unincorporated hamlets (Wofford Heights, Kernville, Weldon, Onyx, Bodfish, South Lake, Mtn. Mesa) on/near the Reservoir Isabella (some call her Lake Isabella). Kern County is our nearest "government."

It is home to 10 to 15,000 souls, a lot of retirees (like myself). Most of the land is in Federal/State/Non-profit ownership in Nat'l. Monuments, Wildernesses, Forests, Reserves, Preserves, Corp. of Engineers & BLM lands. The only "industry" is eco-tourism, boating, fishing, wind-surfing, kayaking & white-water rafting.
